Midnight Choir was a Norwegian alternative rock/alt-country band active from 1992 to 2004. Biography The members of Midnight Choir were Al DeLoner (Atle Bystrøm 'Olsen'), Paal Flaata, and Ron 'Bystrøm' Olsen. (Atle and Ron are brothers) The band played a kind of Americana music and was named after the opening of Leonard Cohen's song " Bird on a Wire": "Like a bird on a wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir." Paal Flaata
Pål Flåta (born 8 April 1968) is a Norwegian vocalist, known from the band Midnight Choir and as a solo artist. Career Flaata was born in Skien, Norway. He started his career in the Skien band Memphis News and has since then been involved in Paal & Pål Band with Pål Jensen, Carsten "Kesh" Holt, and Vidar Busk. In the early 1990s, Flaata traveled to Oslo along with two other musicians. There, they played hillbilly music on the street and were called the Hashbrowns. Then the band got a record deal, and went to the US to record an album. Hashbrowns was then transformed to Midnight Choir. Flaata was in the forefront of Midnight Choir, until the band was dissolved in 2004, and was involved in the outlet of five albums plus a compilation. He debuted as a solo artist in 2002 with ''In Demand'' and continued as a solo artist after the dissolution of Midnight Choir. Madrugada (band)
Madrugada is a Norwegian alternative rock band formed in the town of Stokmarknes in 1993. The key band members included Sivert Høyem (vocals), Robert Burås (guitar) and Frode Jacobsen (bass). After Burås' death on 12 July 2007, Høyem and Jacobsen decided to finish recording what was to be their final album with the original lineup. On 21 January 2008, the band released '' Madrugada'' and announced that they would split after one last tour. They performed their final concert of this tour on 15 November 2008. In June 2018 it was announced that Høyem, Jacobsen and Lauvland Pettersen had reformed the band for a series of shows in 2019. According to Anders Kaasen of Allmusic, the band was noted for "its bareboned blues-inspired alt-rock" at the end of the 1990s. Poor Rich Ones
Poor Rich Ones (1989-2003) was a pop and rock band from Bergen, Norway, comprised by lead singer, songwriter and guitarist William Hut, keyboardist Bjørn Bunes, bassist Tor Sørensen, guitarists Eivind Kvamme, Espen Mellingen, and drummer Bjarte Ludvigsen ("blue"). Formed in 1994, the band released their debut album ''Naivety's Star'' in 1996 on the local label Rec 90. Q magazine described their style as "infinitely sad and nocturnal, yet uplifting rather than depressing", calling the band "Norway's own Radiohead". After four successful album releases, including a final "best of" album after a United States tour, the band effectively dissolved in 2003. Although they have not broken up officially, the band's homepage states they have "no future plans". Vocalist William Hut has pursued a solo career, often assisted by ex-band colleague Bjørn Bunes. Nils Petter Molvær () also known as NPM (born 18 September 1960) is a Norwegian jazz trumpeter, composer, and record producer. He is considered a pioneer of future jazz, a genre that fuses jazz and electronic music, best showcased on his most commercially successful album, '' Khmer''. Biography Molvær was born and raised on the island of Sula, Møre og Romsdal, Norway, and left at age nineteen to study on the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (1980–82). He joined the bands Jazzpunkensemblet with Jon Eberson and Masqualero, alongside Arild Andersen, Jon Christensen and Tore Brunborg. Masqualero (named after a Wayne Shorter composition originally recorded by Miles Davis) recorded several albums for ECM Records, and Molvær recorded with other ECM artists before his 1997 debut solo album, ''Khmer''. Spellemannprisen, often referred to as the Norwegian Grammy Awards in English, is a Norwegian music award presented to Norwegian musicians. The award was established by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), an organization that represents the interests of the recording industry worldwide. First awarded in 1973, the prize honours musicians from the previous year; it is still awarded annually, usually in January or February. The Spellemann committee, composed of members of IFPI Norway and FONO, manages the award and acts as the judge. 21 categories are currently awarded, in addition to other honorary and industry awards the committee may give. Bird On The Wire
"Bird on the Wire" is one of Leonard Cohen's signature songs. It was recorded 26 September 1968 in Nashville and included on his 1969 album ''Songs from a Room''. A May 1968 recording produced by David Crosby, titled "Like a Bird", was added to the 2007 remastered CD. Judy Collins was the first to release the song on her 1968 album ''Who Knows Where the Time Goes''. Joe Cocker also covered the song on his second studio album the following year. In the 1960s, Cohen lived on the Greek island Hydra with his girlfriend Marianne Ihlen, the woman depicted on the back cover of ''Songs from a Room''. She has related how she helped him out of a depression by handing him his guitar, whereupon he began composing "Bird on the Wire", inspired by a bird sitting on one of Hydra's recently installed phone wires, followed by memories of wet island nights.
