Midland Railway 1116A Class
The Midland Railway 1116A Class was a class of 0-4-0 ST for shunting. Ten were built at Derby in the 1890s, five in 1893 and five in 1897. They were closely related to the 1322 and 1134A classes. Construction history The ten locomotives were built at Derby Works in two batches of 5 each in 1893 and 1897. They were numbered initially as 1116A–1120A, 2359–2360 and 1131A–1133A, the A suffix indicating the duplicate list. They were renumbered as 1508–1517 in 1907. Disposal All were still in service at the Midland's 1907 renumbering. The first locomotive was withdrawn in 1921, leaving nine to pass to the London Midland and Scottish Railway at the 1923 grouping. Derby Works
The Derby Works comprised a number of British manufacturing facilities designing and building locomotives and rolling stock in Derby, England. The first of these was a group of three maintenance sheds opened around 1840 behind Derby station. This developed into a manufacturing facility called the Midland Railway Locomotive Works, known locally as "the loco" and in 1873 manufacturing was split into locomotive and rolling stock manufacture, with rolling stock work transferred to a new facility, Derby Carriage & Wagon Works. From its earliest days, it had carried out research and development in a number of areas, and in 1933 the London, Midland and Scottish Railway opened the LMS Scientific Research Laboratory. Midland Railway 1322 Class
The Midland Railway (MR) 1322 Class was a class of small 0-4-0ST steam locomotives designed for shunting. The next class of shunting engines built by the Midland was the 1116A Class, which was nearly identical. Numbering Ten engines were built at Derby Works, five in 1883 and the remainder in 1889–1890. Their original numbers were 1322–1326, 202, 1428–1430, 1697. In 1892 they were all placed on the duplicate list as 1322A–1326A, 202A, 1428A–1430A, 1697A. Disposal Nos 202A and 1429A were withdrawn before the Midland's 1907 renumbering scheme, leaving the remainder to become 1500–1507. By 1928, all but 1506 had been withdrawn, and in 1930 the survivor 1506 was renumbered 1509 to make room for the ex- S&DJR Fox, Walker 0-6-0ST locomotives taken into LMS stock that year. Pentrich Colliery
Pentrich is a small village and civil parish between Belper and Alfreton in Amber Valley, Derbyshire, England. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was 191. Pentrich rising The village gave its name to the Pentrich rising, an armed uprising which occurred on the night of 9/10 June 1817. The name is controversial. Midland Railway 1134A Class
The Midland Railway 1134A Class was a class of 0-4-0ST steam locomotives. They were a development of the preceding 1116A Class, but were generally larger in most dimensions. The subsequent 1528 Class was effectively a side tank version of this class. Five were built in 1897 and five in 1903, all at Derby Works. Their original numbers were 1134A–1143A, i.e. all of them on the duplicate list. Their 1907 numbers were 1518–1527.
