Midland Hotel, Derby
The Midland Hotel, also known as Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland, is a hotel on Midland Road in Derby in the East Midlands of England, adjacent to Derby railway station. It is the oldest extant purpose-built station hotel in the world. Architecture and history The hotel was designed by Francis Thompson for the North Midland Railway and built by Thomas Jackson of Pimlico. It opened in 1841 as the Midland Hotel and Posting House and is today a grade II listed building. On 28 September 1849, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and the Royal Family stayed overnight in the hotel whilst travelling back from Balmoral Castle to Osborne House. It was originally a separate enterprise until the Midland Railway purchased it in 1860. The Midland Railway was one of the largest railway companies in Britain. Nottingham Journal
The ''Nottingham Journal'' was a newspaper published in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands in England. During that time, the paper went through several title changes through mergers, take-overs, acquisitions and ownership changes. History Nottingham's first newspaper was probably ''The Weekly Courant'', published by William Ayscough in August, 1712. It was followed by The ''Nottingham Post'' in 1716. In 1723 Ayscough took over the Post and later that year he published ''The Nottingham Weekly Courant''. ''The Courant'' lasted until 1769, when Samuel Cresswell bought it and in 1787 changed its name to ''The Nottingham Journal''. Derby City Council
Derby City Council is the local government unitary authority for Derby, a city in the East Midlands region of England. It comprises 51 councillors, three for each of the 17 electoral wards of Derby. Midland Railway War Memorial
The Midland Railway War Memorial is a First World War memorial in Derby in the East Midlands of England. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1921. The memorial commemorates employees of the Midland Railway who died while serving in the armed forces during the First World War. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. Around a third of the company's workforce, some 23,000 men, left to fight, of whom 2,833 were killed. Standing on Midland Road, within sight of Derby Midland railway station and backing on to the garden of the Midland Hotel, the memorial consists of a cenotaph partially enclosed by a screen wall on three sides. British Transport Hotels (BTH) was the hotels and catering business of the nationalised railway system in Great Britain. British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was a state-owned company that operated most of the overground rail transport in Great Britain from 1948 to 1997. The Railways Act 1921 (c. 55), also known as the Grouping Act, was an Act of Parliament enacted by the British government and intended to stem the losses being made by many of the country's 120 railway companies, by "grouping" them into four large companies dubbed the " Big Four". The ''Derby Telegraph'', formerly the ''Derby Evening Telegraph'', is a daily tabloid newspaper distributed in the Derby area of England. Stories produced by the Derby Telegraph team are published online under the Derbyshire Live brand. History In 1857, Richard Keene was publishing the ''Derby Telegraph'' every Saturday. William Henry Hamlyn
William Henry Hamlyn FRIBA (16 February 1889 – 1968) was an architect based in England noted for his buildings for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. He was born in Wigan in Lancashire. He studied architecture with Reginald Wynn Owen in Liverpool and later at the Royal Academy School. He entered railway service in 1911 initially with the London and North Western Railway. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1934 and became the chief architect for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway company. He drew up plans with Percy Thomas for the rebuilding of Euston railway station in 1936, but the outbreak of the Second World War resulted in their cancellation He designed a series of pre-fabricated railway stations which were built on blitz-damaged station sites from 1945 onwards.
