The Middletown Middies were a minor league baseball team based in Middletown, New York. In 1913 and 1914, the Middies played as members of the New York–New Jersey League in 1913 and Atlantic League in 1914, hosting home minor league games at Watts Field. History Minor league baseball play began in Middletown, New York in 1913, when the Middletown "Middies" became members of the six–team Class D level New York–New Jersey League. The Danbury Hatters, Kingston Colonials, Long Branch Cubans, Newburgh Hillclimbers and Poughkeepsie Honey Bugs teams joined Middletown in league play. Middletown ended the 1913 season with a record of 42–51, placing fourth in the New York–New Jersey League as Jack Lawlor served as manager. Middletown finished 22.5 games behind the first place Long Branch Cubans. Newark Indians
The Newark Sailors, later known as the Newark Indians, were a minor league baseball team in the early twentieth century. The team played its games at Wiedenmayer's Park in Newark, New Jersey. Newark played in the Eastern League between 1908 and 1911, and they played in the International League from 1912 to 1916. The team featured strong pitching. In 1908, Tom Hughes led the Eastern League in strikeouts. In 1909, Joe McGinnity led in wins (29), games (55) and strikeouts (195) while allowing just 297 hits in 422 innings. In 1910, McGinnity won 30 games and Rube Waddell finished with a 5-3 record. McGinnity continued as player-manager for two more years. The team won the International League pennant in 1913, but the following year they slipped to fifth. Bloomfield-Long Branch Cubans
The Long Branch Cubans (also known as the Newark Cubans and the Jersey City Cubans) were a professional baseball team that played from 1913 to 1916. It was the first U.S. minor league baseball team composed almost entirely of Cubans. Figueredo 2003, p. 107. Several players, including Dolf Luque and Mike González, went on to play in the major leagues. The Cubans played in Long Branch, New Jersey from 1913 to 1915, except for the first half of the 1914 season, when they played in Newark, New Jersey. In 1916, they started the season playing in Jersey City, New Jersey as the "Jersey City Cubans." Later that summer, they moved their home games to Poughkeepsie, New York, where they were usually referred to as the "Long Branch Cubans."
