Middlesex 9s
Middlesex 9s (also known as the Mx9s) is a rugby league nines tournament that is hosted by the London Skolars rugby league club at their New River Stadium in North London, and held in August. The Middlesex 9s was a concept formulated betweethe Federation of Middlesex Sportsand the London Skolars based along similar lines as the rugby union sevens tournament; the Middlesex 7s. The tournament brings together teams from abroad, amateur, student and the armed forces. The aims are to aid the development of rugby league. It is unusual in allowing rugby union clubs to take part in a rugby league competition. The 2006 competition was expanded to involve mainly international teams from the developing nations, and held in conjunction with the Challenge Cup final after its relocation back to London. Rugby League Nines
Rugby league nines (or simply nines) is a version of rugby league football played with nine players on each side. The game is substantially the same as full rugby league, with some differences in rules and shorter games. Nines is usually played in festivals, as its shorter game play allows for a tournament to be completed in a day or over a single weekend. In July 2021, International Rugby League (IRL) chair Troy Grant stated that the organization was considering a bid for rugby league nines to be played at the 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane. London Skolars
The London Skolars are a professional rugby league club based at the New River Stadium, Wood Green, Haringey in north London. They were founded in 1995 and have been professional since 2003, operating in the Betfred League 1. They also run an A-team (formerly known as ''Haringey Hornets'') that play in the South Premier Division of the Rugby League Conference. History The club was founded by Ian "Hector" McNeil in 1995 as Student Rugby League Old Boys, created for post-university graduates based in London who wished to continue playing competitive rugby league, with a number of ex-student international rugby league players as members. White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre, also known as the New River Stadium is a rugby league and athletics stadium in Wood Green, Haringey, north London, England that is home to London Skolars rugby league club, Enfield and Haringey Athletic Club, Wood Green Weightlifting Club, Park View F.C., Haringey Rhinos rugby union club and Haringey Cycling Club. The stadium has hosted the Britbowl, the championship game of British American football, in 2019 and 2022. The New River Stadium also hosts the Middlesex 9s rugby league nines tournament. The Middlesex Sevens was a Rugby Sevens tournament held annually at Twickenham stadium in London, England until 2011. It was first held in 1926, and started by Dr J.A. Russell-Cargill, a London-based Scot.Bath, ''Scotland Rugby Miscellany'', p82 The event was held at the end of the rugby union season in May every year for 75 years and moved to August in 2001 due to lack of available stadium dates and players in May. The Middlesex Sevens tournament was last played in 2011, as the new Premiership Rugby 7s Series caused many of the top clubs that previously took part to pull out.
