Middle Island Light
The Middle Island Light is a lighthouse located on Middle Island in Lake Huron, about north of Alpena, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. History Middle Island historically marked an important location for mariners on Lake Huron, being midway on a journey between the north point of Thunder Bay and Presque Isle. The lee side of the island also offered a safe harbor during storms, but the access to the harbor was guarded by shoals. Recognizing the danger of the area, the United States Life-Saving Service constructed a station on the island in 1881. By the 1890s, the need for a lighthouse on the island was apparent, and in 1896, the United States Lighthouse Board requested appropriations to construct one. The request was not acted on until 1902, when Congress appropriated $25,000 for the construction of a light and fog signal on Middle Island, one of the last lights in a string along the Michigan shore of Lake Huron. Middle Island (Lake Huron)
Middle Island is an island in Lake Huron, located in Alpena Township, Alpena County, Michigan. The island is positioned little over a mile and a half from the community of Lakewood on the mainland. The Middle Island Light, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and built in 1905, lies on the eastern edge of the island. It used to be home to a Life-Saving Station. The light house was automated in 1961, and regular staffing ceased. The island is within the boundaries of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It preserves the lighthouse along with the shipwreck ''Portsmouth (1867)''. The Middle Island Sinkhole is located around 500 foot north of the island at . The sinkhole is about 75 feet deep and is available for divers to explore. The United States Lighthouse Board was the second agency of the U.S. federal government, under the Department of Treasury, responsible for the construction and maintenance of all lighthouses and navigation aids in the United States, between 1852 and 1910. The new agency was created following complaints of the shipping industry of the previous administration of lighthouses under the Treasury's Lighthouse Establishment, which had had jurisdiction since 1791, and since 1820, been under the control of Stephen Pleasonton. Presque Isle Township is a civil township of Presque Isle County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,656 at the 2010 census.
