Wausaukee is a town in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The estimated population was 573 in 2011. The Village of Wausaukee is located within the town. The unincorporated community of Cedarville is located partially in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 77.4 square miles (200.6 km2), of which, 75.7 square miles (196.1 km2) of it is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2) of it (2.21%) is water. The Wausaukee River flows through the town into the Menominee River. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,196 people, 469 households, and 354 families residing in the town. Lake Noquebay
Lake Noquebay ( ) is a large freshwater lake in northeastern Wisconsin. It is the largest lake in Marinette County. It is located north of Green Bay, Wisconsin, approximately northeast of Crivitz, Wisconsin. Name Lake Noquebay was spelled ''Noque Bay'' or ''Nocque Bay'' in older sources. The name is believed to derive from Ojibwe ''noka'' or ''noke'', meaning 'totem of the bear', and is likely a French interpretation to the names of Bay de Noc and the Noquet tribe. The implication of this naming would suggest that this area was important to the Noquet tribe's bear clan. History The Lake Noquebay Wildlife area was acquired by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) in 1960 from Marinette County. Crivitz is a village in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 984 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Marinette, WI– MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Crivitz was surveyed and plotted in the summer of 1883. This work was filed with the Register of Deeds in Marinette County on 10 September 1883 by German immigrant Frederick John Bartels,http://www.villageofcrivitz.com who named the settlement after his home town of Crivitz, Germany. The demographic character of the Crivitz area was shaped significantly after a typhoid epidemic in 1894, which shut down the sawmills. Hieronymus Zech (1849–1932), a mill operator from Chilton, took over operation of the inactive mills and promoted land sales to Polish immigrants, many of whom relocated from Milwaukee and Chicago. The Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad is a Class III shortline railroad that operates of track in Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Its main line runs from Rockland, Michigan, to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and it also owns various branch lines and out-of-service track. In 1897, the Escanaba River Company built a railroad from Wells, Michigan to tap a large hardwood timber stand at LaFave’s Hill. Wausaukee is a village in Marinette County, Wisconsin, in the United States. The population was 575 at the 2010 census. The village is part of the Marinette, WI– MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe, who bought 160 acres of land from business tycoon Lars Kovala and built a mill to supply the railroads with lumber for bridges and culverts.
