Mid-West Family Broadcasting is an independently owned broadcasting company based in Madison, Wisconsin. The company owns and manages radio stations in Madison, Wisconsin, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, La Crosse, Wisconsin, Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Michigan, South Bend/ Elkhart, Indiana, Springfield, Illinois, Springfield, Missouri, and Rockford, Illinois. In 2013 Mid-West Family purchased the Maverick stations in Rockford, Illinois and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. This added 11 stations starting May 1, 2013 with an LMA. On November 2, 2015, Gray Television agreed to sell the WSBT radio group to Mid-West Family when the deal to acquire the television and radio assets of Schurz Communications closes. This will add four stations in the Michiana area to Mid-West's lineup. The Midwestern United States, also referred to as the Midwest or the American Midwest, is one of four census regions of the United States Census Bureau (also known as "Region 2"). Schurz Communications is a South Bend, Indiana-based broadband media group and cloud services provider. It owned newspapers. History The company was founded in 1872 by Alfred B. Miller and Elmer Crockett with the creation of the ''South Bend Tribune.'' Over the years the company grew through the acquisition of other newspapers, media outlets, radio and television stations, digital companies, broadband operations and cloud services provider. The expanding company was renamed Schurz Communications Inc. in 1976, when the newspapers division and the TV/broadcast division were split into separate entities. WAXX
WAXX (104.5 FM) is a radio station in the Eau Claire area of Wisconsin, with its studio/offices located in Altoona, Wisconsin. Its transmitter is located in Fairchild, Wisconsin, sharing the tower with WEAU. History The station was originally WEAU-FM, an FM station co-owned with WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, broadcasting at the 100.7 FM frequency until 1967 when it switched to 104.5 FM. When WAXX 1150 was purchased and brought under the same ownership as WEAU-TV/WEAU-FM, WEAU-FM began simulcasting WAXX's country format. In the September 1977, WEAU-FM's call letters were changed to WAXX-FM, and eventually the country format was aired exclusively on the FM dial (WAXX was renamed WAYY in the 1978 and changed formats to oldies, eventually settling on news/talk in 1991, and later sports/talk in 2014). Classic Hits
Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes songs from the top 40 music charts from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, with music from the 1980s serving as the core of the format. Music that was popularized by MTV in the early 1980s and the nostalgia behind it is a major driver to the format. It is considered the successor to the oldies format, a collection of top 40 songs from the late 1950s through the late 1970s that was once extremely popular in the United States and Canada. WISM-FM (98.1 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a classic hits format. Licensed to Altoona, Wisconsin, United States, the station serves the Eau Claire-Chippewa Falls area. It is owned by Mid-West Family Broadcasting. History The WISM FM callsign was first used in 1959 in Madison at 98.1 FM. On December 1, 1983, WISM became changed its callsign to WMGN. Eventually, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) controlled and licensed station call lettered were acquired by Alpenglow Communications, which relaunched WISM-FM in November 1991 with a classic rock format. WIAL
WIAL (94.1 FM) is a radio station in the Eau Claire area of Wisconsin, with its studio/offices located in Altoona, Wisconsin. Its transmitter is located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. History The station began in 1948 as an easy listening station with the call letters WEAU-FM. In 1959, the callsign was switched to WIAL, similar to "The Wonderful WAIL" (WAYL, now KXXR) in Minneapolis. On November 1, 1982, WIAL switched formats to become Adult Contemporary, in the wake of the transition of pop/rock formats from AM to FM stations and debuted the name "I-94" after Interstate 94 which runs along the south and west side of Eau Claire. Right when 1986 rolled along, the station upgraded its format to Top 40 to compete against WBIZ-FM. Active rock stations play a balance of new hard rock songs with valued classic rock favorites, normally with an emphasis on the harder edge of mainstream rock and album-oriented rock. WECL
WECL (92.9 FM, "The X") is an active rock formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Lake Hallie, Wisconsin, serving the Eau Claire/ Chippewa Falls area. WECL is owned and operated by Mid-West Family Broadcasting. History The station originally aired an Adult Contemporary format. When it was purchased by Midwest Family Communications that owned WIAL and WEAQ, it switched to an oldies format, becoming "Oldies 92.9" on January 1, 1995. The station also moved from the near the Menards Shopping Center on the northwest side of Eau Claire to Tower Drive on the northeast side. WEAQ
WEAQ (1150 AM) is a radio station in the Eau Claire area of Wisconsin, with its studio and offices located in Altoona, Wisconsin. Its transmitter is located in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin. History The station was originally WEAU at the 1050 AM frequency, switching to 790 in 1941. Call letters were switched to WEAQ upon a 1959 ownership change. Eventually, the station moved to Tower Drive on the northeast side of Eau Claire, playing pop music with occasional format switches to country, rock, adult contemporary and standards. WEAQ converted to sports talk in April 2002 with a near-full simulcast of ESPN Radio, and the rebranding as "ESPN 1150." WAYY
WAYY (790 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It broadcasts a sports radio format and is owned by Mid-West Family Broadcasting. Programming is mostly from CBS Sports Radio. It also carries Milwaukee Brewers baseball and Milwaukee Bucks basketball. The radio studios and offices are in Altoona, Wisconsin. By day, WAYY is powered at 5,000 watts non-directional. But to protect other stations on 790 AM from interference, it reduces power at night to 123 watts. (For most of its history, WAYY ran 5,000 watts around the clock, using a directional antenna at night with multiple towers. But as an economy move, those extra towers were sold off and nighttime power was reduced.) WAYY's transmitter is on Black Avenue at Tower Drive in Seymour, Wisconsin.
