A valve is each articulating part of the shell of a mollusc or another multi-shelled animal such as brachiopods and some crustaceans. Karl Theodor Menke
Karl Theodor Menke (13 September 1791 – 1861) was a German malacologist and balneologist who was a native of Bremen. He is remembered for his research on snails. Menke studied medicine at the University of Göttingen (with Promotion in 1814), and worked as a physician at the spa in Bad Pyrmont. In 1831 he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. In 1844 he founded the journal ''Zeitschrift für Malakozoologie'' (from 1854 titled ''Malakozoologische Blätter''). With Ludwig Karl Georg Pfeiffer (1805—1877), he was editor of the magazine. During his lifetime, Menke amassed a large collection of snail shells, which were purchased by dealer M.J. Mussel () is the common name used for members of several families of bivalve molluscs, from saltwater and Freshwater bivalve, freshwater habitats. These groups have in common a shell whose outline is elongated and asymmetrical compared with other edible clams, which are often more or less rounded or oval. The Unionidae are a family of freshwater mussels, the largest in the order Unionida, the bivalve molluscs sometimes known as river mussels, or simply as unionids. The range of distribution for this family is world-wide. It is at its most diverse in North America, with about 297 recognised taxa, but China and Southeast Asia also support very diverse faunas.
