Micranots
Micranots is an American hip hop duo, consisting of I Self Devine and DJ Kool Akiem from Atlanta, Georgia, but currently reside in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2013, the group was described by '' City Pages'' as "the pioneering rap group that left an immense footprint on the local hip-hop scene". Early beginnings The original roster of Micranots included I Self Devine, DJ Kool Akiem, and Truth Maze, another emcee. The group originally formed in 1991 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the group moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1994 after Truth Maze left the group. Following the release of their second album, '' Obelisk Movements'', they returned to Minnesota. The group soon became well known, in effect helping popularize Twin Cities hip hop and Midwest hip hop as a whole. Background When first creating the album, I Self Devine and DJ Kool Akiem had in mind to involve the album into present day news, and the name of the record was first named ''The Emperor & the Terrorist'' in response to the 9/11 attacks. However, the group decided to change the name when getting closer to release as to avoid any controversy. I Self Devine
Chaka Mkali (born 1972), better known by his stage name I Self Devine, is an American hip hop musician based in Minneapolis. He has been a member of groups such as The Dynospectrum, Micranots, and Semi.Official. In 2012, '' City Pages'' described him as "one of the most influential voices in Minnesota hip hop." Early life I Self Devine was born in Los Angeles, California and moved to Minnesota with his mother when she was accepted to the University of Minnesota's social work master's program. Rhymesayers Entertainment (sometimes abbreviated RSE) is an American independent hip-hop record label based in Minneapolis. History Rhymesayers Entertainment was co-founded in 1995 by Sean Daley (Slug), Anthony Davis (Ant), Musab Saad (Sab the Artist) and Brent Sayers (Siddiq). Former members of the Headshots crew. Beginning in 2008, Rhymesayers Entertainment sponsors the annual Soundset Music Festival, a popular attraction that takes place over Memorial Day weekend in Minneapolis. The music festival was postponed in 2020. Rhymesayers released Prof and Dem Atlas from their label in 2020. Sean Michael Daley (born September 7, 1972), better known by his stage name Slug, is an American rapper from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Slug is best known as one half of the hip hop group Atmosphere, which he founded with Derek Turner (Spawn). Turner has since left and Anthony Davis (Ant) produces Atmosphere with Slug.
