John Micklethwaite
Sir John Micklethwaite M.D. (1612–1682) was an English physician, who attended Charles II. He was President of the Royal College of Physicians. Life John Micklethwaite was the son of Thomas Micklethwaite, rector of Cherry Burton, Yorkshire, and was baptised, 23 August 1612, in the church of Bishop Burton, three miles from Beverley. He entered at the University of Leyden as a medical student in 1637, and took the degree of M.D. at the University of Padua in 1638. He proceeded M.D. by incorporation at Oxford 14 April 1648. On 26 May 1643, Micklethwaite was appointed assistant physician at St. Bartholomew's Hospital to Dr John Clarke, whose eldest daughter he married, and he was elected physician 13 May 1653. The Long Parliament, 12 Feb. 1644, had recommended him for promotion, "in the place of Dr. Harvey, who hath withdrawn himself from his charge and is retired to the party in arms against the Parliament." John Thomas Micklethwaite
John Thomas Micklethwaite (3 May 1843 – 28 October 1906) was an English architect and archaeologist. He had a long association with Westminster Abbey, and was noted for his criticisms of the current practices of church restoration. Biography He was born at Rishworth House, Bond Street, Wakefield, Yorkshire (which stood on the site of what is now County Hall, Wakefield) to James Micklethwaite of Hopton, Mirfield, a worsted spinner and colliery owner, and his wife, Sarah Eliza Stanway of Manchester. He grew up in the Micklethwaite family’s ancestral home at Hopton Hall and was educated in Tadcaster and Wakefield. After moving to London where he attended King’s College, he was apprenticed, in 1862, to George Gilbert Scott, commencing independent practice in London in 1869. By 1876 Micklethwaite had entered partnership with Somers Clarke, his lifelong friend and fellow pupil of Scott. His work as an architect consisted mainly of small-scale ecclesiastical commissions. Joseph Micklethwaite, 1st Viscount Micklethwaite (c. 1680 – 16 January 1734) was an English politician, peer and diplomat. Early life and family background Joseph Micklethwaite was born circa 1680. The Micklethwaites were the descendants of Dr. Joseph Micklethwaite of York, who had retired from his physician's practice and had purchased the manor of Swine, becoming a gentleman farmer and an active county magistrate. Dr. Micklethwaite was married to Ann Topham, the widow of Christopher Topham, member of Parliament and York merchant, and the daughter of Percival Levett, a Sheriff of York and a merchant. Joseph's elder brother was Thomas Micklethwaite of Swine, Yorkshire, who represented Arundel in Parliament, was later a Lord of the Treasury, and subsequently was named Lieutenant-General of the Ordnance. A British journalist, he was previously the editor-in-chief of ''The Economist'' from 2006 to 2015. Life and career Micklethwait was born in 1962, in London, and was educated at Ampleforth College (an independent school) and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied history. He worked for Chase Manhattan Bank for two years and joined ''The Economist'' in 1987. Prior to becoming editor-in-chief, he was United States editor of the publication and ran the New York Bureau for two years. Before that, he edited the Business Section of the newspaper for four years.
