Michigan's 10th House of Representatives district (also referred to as Michigan's 10th House district) is a legislative district within the Michigan House of Representatives located in parts of Macomb and Wayne counties. Gabe Leland
Gabriel Leland (born September 28, 1982) is a convicted criminal and former Democratic politician from the state of Michigan. In 2004, Leland was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives, representing the 10th District, which is located in Wayne County and includes the farwest and partial northwest corner of the city of Detroit. Leland has served on the Detroit City Council from 2013 to 2021, when he resigned and pleaded guilty to misconduct in office. Biography Gabriel Leland was born on September 28, 1982 to Burton and Rosanne Leland, a Jewish family from Northwest Detroit. The 2012 Michigan House of Representatives elections were held on November 6, 2012, with partisan primaries to select the parties' nominees in the various districts on August 7, 2012. Due to gerrymandering, the Republican Party retained its majority in the House of Representatives despite losing the popular vote. Rep. Roy Schmidt scandal State Representative Roy Schmidt was defeated for re-election after assisting in engineering an election-rigging scandal by which he switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party and recruited a straw candidate to run as a Democrat in order to ensure a swift re-election. An election was held on November 8, 2016 to elect all 110 members to Michigan's House of Representatives. The election coincided with elections for other offices, including U.S. President, U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. The primary election was held on August 2, 2016. There was no change in the composition of the House as Republicans retained control, winning 63 seats compared to 47 seats for the Democrats. Republicans retained control of the House, despite losing the popular vote, after a net loss of five seats, winning 58 seats compared to 52 seats for the Democrats. Term-limited members Under the Michigan Constitution, members of the state Senate are able to serve only two four-year terms, and members of the House of Representatives are limited to three two-year terms, some of the toughest term-limit laws in the country. Mary Cavanagh (born 1991) is an American politician serving as a Democratic Party member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 10th district. Elected in 2020 while attending college at Wayne State University, she assumed office on January 1, 2021. Early life and education Cavanagh was born in Redford Township, Michigan to parents Phil Cavanagh and Lily Cavanagh. In December 2020, Cavanagh earned a bachelor's degree in physical anthropology from Wayne State University. She is the granddaughter of Detroit mayor Jerome Cavanaugh who served from 1962-1970. Career Cavanagh was an AmeriCorps member, and also served as a precinct delegate for Redford Township; a board member of the Michigan Democratic Women's Caucus; and as director of the New Start Construction Company. Leslie Love
Leslie N. Love (born July 8, 1971) is an American politician and government official. A member of the Democratic Party, Love served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2014 to 2020. Love represented the 10th District, which encompasses parts of northwest Detroit and Redford Township. After leaving the state legislature, Love was appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission, becoming the first African-American to serve on the commission. She is currently a candidate to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate in the 2024 election. Education Love attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Thomas M. Cooley High School.
