Michele Salzman
Michele R. Salzman (born August 2, 1952) is a distinguished professor of history at the University of California, Riverside. She is an expert on the religious and social history of late antiquity. Education Salzman was born in Brooklyn and received her B.A. degree from Brooklyn College in 1973. She was awarded her master's degree in 1975 from Bryn Mawr College in 1975. Salzman received her PhD from Bryn Mawr College in 1981. Her doctoral thesis was entitled ''Studies on the Calendar of 354.'' Career and research In 1986–1987, Salzman was the Mellon fellow in classical studies at the American Academy in Rome. Salzman taught at Swarthmore College, Columbia University, and Boston University before joining the history faculty at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) in 1995. Late Antiquity
Late antiquity is the time of transition from classical antiquity to the Middle Ages, generally spanning the 3rd–7th century in Europe and adjacent areas bordering the Mediterranean Basin. The popularization of this periodization in English has generally been credited to historian Peter Brown, after the publication of his seminal work '' The World of Late Antiquity'' (1971). Precise boundaries for the period are a continuing matter of debate, but Brown proposes a period between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Generally, it can be thought of as from the end of the Roman Empire's Crisis of the Third Century (235–284) to the early Muslim conquests (622–750), or as roughly contemporary with the Sasanian Empire (224–651). In the West its end was earlier, with the start of the Early Middle Ages typically placed in the 6th century, or earlier on the edges of the Western Roman Empire. Marianne Sághy (1961 – 2018) was a Hungarian expert on the religious and social culture of Late Antiquity, with an especial focus on the cult of saints and hagiography. She was associate professor at the Department of Medieval Studies, Central European University, and at the Department of Medieval and Early Modern Universal History, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. Claudia Rapp
Claudia Rapp FBA is a German scholar of the Byzantine Empire. She is currently Professor of Byzantine Studies at the University of Vienna, a position she has held since 2011. Having studied at the Free University of Berlin, she then obtained her D.Phil. in Modern History at the University of Oxford in 1992. She was a Professor in the History Department of the University of California, Los Angeles between 1994 and 2011, before taking up her current post in Vienna. In 2012 she became the Director of the Division of Byzantine Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and became a Full Member of the Academy two years later. Peter Brown (historian)
Peter Robert Lamont Brown (born 26 July 1935) is Rollins Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University. He is credited with having brought coherence to the field of Late Antiquity, and is sometimes regarded as the inventor of the field. His work has concerned, in particular, the religious culture of the later Roman Empire and early medieval Europe, and the relation between religion and society. Early life Peter Brown was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1935, to a Scots-Irish Protestant family. Until 1939, he spent winter and spring each year in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, where his father worked as a railway engineer based at Khartoum. For the rest of the year, he would return with his mother to Bray, in Co. Wicklow, near Dublin. Following the outbreak of war, Brown and his mother remained in Ireland, though his father did not return finally until 1948.
