Michael Wright (Australian Politician)
Michael John Wright (born 3 May 1956) is an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Lee from 1997 to 2014. Wright has a Bachelor of Education, and held ministry positions in the Rann cabinet from 2002 to 2011. Prior to entering parliament, Wright was involved with the Australian Workers' Union from the late 1980s until the mid 1990s. The Australian Labor Party (South Australian Branch), commonly known as South Australian Labor, is the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party, originally formed in 1891 as the United Labor Party of South Australia. It is one of two major parties in the bicameral Parliament of South Australia, the other being the Liberal Party of Australia (SA Division). Since the 1970 election, marking the beginning of democratic proportional representation (one vote, one value) and ending decades of pro-rural electoral malapportionment known as the Playmander, Labor have won 11 of the 15 elections. South Australian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of South Australia. The other is the Legislative Council. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. Overview The House of Assembly was created in 1857, when South Australia attained self-government. Lee is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. Named after the women's suffrage campaigner Mary Lee, it is an 18.9 km² suburban electorate on Adelaide's north-western beaches, taking in the suburbs of Grange, Royal Park, Seaton, Semaphore Park, Tennyson, West Lakes, and West Lakes Shore. Lee was created as a fairly safe Labor electorate in the 1991 electoral distribution to replace the abolished electoral district of Albert Park and absorbed half of the abolished electoral district of Semaphore. The first member for Lee, elected at the 1993 election, was controversial Liberal MP Joe Rossi, with the governments smallest margin of 1.1 percent; Rossi's election was unexpected, but was part of a large swing away from Labor throughout the state. The Australian Workers' Union (AWU) is one of Australia's largest and oldest trade unions. It traces its origins to unions founded in the pastoral and mining industries in the 1880s and currently has approximately 80,000 members. Jack Wright (politician)
John David "Jack" Wright (25 January 1927 – 28 August 1998) was an Australian politician and Deputy Premier of South Australia under John Bannon from 1982 to 1985. Wright represented the House of Assembly seat of Adelaide for the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party from 1971 to 1985. Wright was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 1986 Australia Day Honours for "service to politics, industrial relations and the community". Wright was born in Toowoomba, Queensland. He was educated at Mount Carmel College in Charters Towers, but left school early to become a shearer by trade. 2014 South Australian State Election
The 2014 South Australian state election elected members to the 53rd Parliament of South Australia on 15 March 2014, to fill all 47 seats in the House of Assembly (lower house) and 11 of 22 seats in the Legislative Council (upper house). The 12-year-incumbent Australian Labor Party (SA) government, led by Premier Jay Weatherill, won its fourth consecutive four-year term in government, a record 16 years of Labor government, defeating the opposition Liberal Party of Australia (SA), led by Opposition Leader Steven Marshall. Joe Rossi (Australian Politician)
Joseph Peter Rossi (born 22 May 1948) is an Australian politician and former Liberal MP for the seat of Lee in the South Australian House of Assembly. He won the seat at the 1993 election before losing it at the 1997 election. Rossi's election was unexpected as the seat is normally safe Labor, with Lee becoming the Liberal government's most marginal seat on a 1.1 percent margin. He held controversial views such as sterilising unmarried mothers after the third child, and introducing a modern version of poor houses for welfare recipients.
