Michael Weiss (swimmer)
Michael Weiss (born May 23, 1991) is an American competition swimmer who has represented the United States in international championships including the FINA World Championships, Pan American Games, and World University Games. Career Weiss was born in Reno, Nevada, where he was a three-time Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association state champion while in high school, winning one championship event in each of his sophomore, junior and senior years. Weiss won the gold medal at the short course 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, having swum the anchor leg in the preliminary heats, which teammate Matt McLean swam in the final. Weiss swam at the 2013 version of the made-for-television Duel in the Pool. He was also a gold medalist and broke the University Record at the 2013 Summer Universiade. The men's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay competition of the swimming events at the 2015 Pan American Games took place on July 14 at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House in Toronto, Canada. The defending Pan American Games champion is Brazil. This race consisted of eight lengths of the pool. Each of the four swimmers completed two lengths of the pool. 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships
The 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, also known as the 2014 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, a long course (50 m) event, was held in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, from 21 to 25 August 2014. Qualifying criteria Unlike the World Championships and Olympic Games, nations can enter as many people as they like in the preliminaries of each event (in most international meets, only two swimmers from each nation are permitted). However, only two swimmers per nation can qualify for the semi-finals and finals. Prior to FINA's creation of semi-finals in the late 1990s, a total of 3 swimmers per country could qualify for the final and consolation heats of an event, with no more than 2 swimmers per country in a final or consolation. For relays, each country may enter up to one team in each relay event to swim in the final heat and count toward the team score. ''Swimming World'' is a US-based monthly swimming magazine that was first published in a magazine format as ''Junior Swimmer'' in January 1960. It concurrently runs online websites ''Swimming World Magazine'' and ''Swimming World News'', (known as ''SwimInfo'' prior to 2006). The Duel in the Pool is a swimming event that took place bi-annually from 2003 to 2015. In 2022, the event was reintroduced with an edition between the United States and Australia and co-organized by Swimming Australia and USA Swimming. From 2003 to 2015, the competition was organized by USA Swimming, and sponsored by Mutual of Omaha, the event was a made-for-television competition pitting the stars from the United States against another team, accumulating points across a series of individual and team-relay events. Matthew McLean (born May 13, 1988) is an American competition swimmer who has been a member of several winning U.S. teams in freestyle relay events. He was a member of the 2012 United States Olympic team, and earned a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) is the governing body of athletic programs for high schools in the state of Nevada. In addition, five schools in the state of California (Coleville, Needles, North Tahoe, South Tahoe, and Truckee) and one from Arizona (Beaver Dam) are also members as the schools are geographically isolated from other in-state schools. It is a non-profit organization founded in 1922 as the Nevada Interscholastic League and became affiliated with the National Federation of State High School Associations in 1939. The league changed its name to the current form in 1967. The NIAA governs eligibility of student athletes, resolves disputes, organizes levels of competition by divisional separation of schools according to attendance population, and conducts state championship competitions in all the NIAA-sanctioned sports. World University Games
The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games; however, this latter term can also refer to competitions for sub-University grades students. In July 2020 as part of a new branding system by the FISU, it was stated that the Universiade will be officially branded as the FISU World University Games. FINA World Championships
The FINA World Championships or World Aquatics Championships are the World Championships for aquatics sports: swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo. They are run by FINA, and all swimming events are contested in a long course (50-metre) pool. The event was first held in 1973 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and is now held every two years. From 1978 to 1998, the World Championships were held every four years, in the even years between Summer Olympic years. From 2001 until 2019, the Championships have been held every two years, in the odd years. Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the scheduling of both the Olympic Games and the Championships between 2019 and 2025 became somewhat erratic, with World Championships not taking place in Japan in 2021 to accommodate the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics, and then delayed again to 2023 because of pandemic-related issues in Japan. Swimming is an individual or team racing sport that requires the use of one's entire body to move through water. The sport takes place in pools or open water (e.g., in a sea or lake). Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with varied distance events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. In addition to these individual events, four swimmers can take part in either a freestyle or medley relay. A medley relay consists of four swimmers who will each swim a different stroke, ordered as backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Swimming each stroke requires a set of specific techniques; in competition, there are distinct regulations concerning the acceptable form for each individual stroke.
