Michael Wharton
Michael Wharton (19 April 1913 – 23 January 2006) was a British newspaper columnist who wrote under the pseudonym Peter Simple in the British ''Daily Telegraph''. He began work on the "Way of the World" column with illustrator Michael ffolkes three times a week in early 1957, and wrote the column four times a week for a lengthy period ending in 1987. On 13 May 1990 he began a weekly ''Peter Simple'' column in the ''Sunday Telegraph'', before returning to the ''Daily Telegraph'' as a weekly columnist on 8 March 1996. He remained there until his death, aged 92, in 2006, his last column appearing on 20 January 2006. Life and career Wharton was born as Michael Bernhard Nathan, the son of a businessman of German-Jewish origin, at Shipley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire ("Wharton" was the maiden name of his mother). Beverley (UK Parliament Constituency)
Beverley has been the name of a parliamentary constituency in the East Riding of Yorkshire for three periods. From medieval times until 1869 it was a parliamentary borough consisting of a limited electorate of property owners of its early designated borders within the market town of Beverley, which returned (elected) two Members of Parliament to the House of Commons of the English and Welsh-turned-UK Parliament during that period (sometimes called burgesses). A form of a Beverley seat was revived for a single-member county constituency created in 1950, abolished in 1955, and similarly between the 1983 and 1992 general elections inclusive after which the area was largely incorporated into one 1997-created seat Beverley and Holderness; the remainder of the seat contributed to two other late 20th century-created seats. Michael Warton (died 1688)
Michael Warton Deputy Lieutenant, DL (1623 – 9 August 1688) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England, House of Commons from 1660. He supported the Cavaliers, Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Warton was the son of Michael Warton (Royalist), Michael Warton of Beverley and his wife Catherine Maltby, daughter of Christopher Maltby of Maltby, Yorkshire. He was baptised on 27 April 1623. He was educated at Beverley Grammar School and at St John's College, Cambridge in 1640, and was a student of Gray's Inn in 1640. He served in the Royalist army until the Battle of Marston Moor and paid £1,600 on estate of his father for delinquency. He succeeded to the estates of his grandfather in 1655. Michael Warton (died 1645)
Michael Warton (23 October 1593 – 1645) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1640 and 1644. He fought and died on the Royalist side in the English Civil War. Warton was the son of Sir Michael Warton and his wife Elizabeth Hansby, daughter of Sir Ralph Hansby. In April 1640, Warton was elected Member of Parliament for Beverley in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected in November 1640 for the Long Parliament and sat until he was disabled from sitting in parliament in 1644 for supporting the King.
