Michael Van Balen
Rear Admiral Michael Julian van Balen (born 16 February 1961) is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), who served as the Deputy Chief of Navy from 2013 to January 2016. Early life van Balen was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 16 February 1961 to Adrian and Cath van Balen. Naval career van Balen joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1978 and graduated from the Royal Australian Naval College in 1982. van Balen has served in a various billets within the Australian naval high command and United States Navy commands. HMAS ''Derwent'' (F22/DE 22/DE 49), named for the Derwent River (Tasmania), Derwent River, was a River-class destroyer escort of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). She was laid down by Williamstown Naval Dockyard in 1959, and commissioned into the RAN in 1964. During the ship's career, she was deployed to South East Asia on 23 occasions, including operations during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation, and escort of the troopship to and from the Vietnam War. The Australian Defence Medal is an Australian military decoration which recognises current and former Australian Defence Force personnel who completed an initial enlistment period, or four years' service. Forrestal-class Aircraft Carrier
The ''Forrestal''-class aircraft carriers were four aircraft carriers designed and built for the United States Navy in the 1950s. The class ship was named for James Forrestal, the first United States Secretary of Defense. It was the first class of supercarriers, combining high tonnage, deck-edge elevators and an angled deck. The first ship was commissioned in 1955, the last decommissioned in 1998. The four ships of the class were scrapped in Brownsville, Texas, between 2014 and 2017.
