Michael Somos
Michael Somos is an American mathematician, who was a visiting scholar in the Georgetown University Mathematics and Statistics department for four years and is a visiting scholar at Catholic University of America. In the late eighties he proposed a conjecture about certain polynomial recurrences, now called Somos sequences, that surprisingly in some cases contain only integers. Somos' quadratic recurrence constant is also named after him. A mathematician is someone who uses an extensive knowledge of mathematics in their work, typically to solve mathematical problems. In mathematics, a Somos sequence is a sequence of numbers defined by a certain recurrence relation, described below. They were discovered by mathematician Michael Somos. From the form of their defining recurrence (which involves division), one would expect the terms of the sequence to be fractions, but nevertheless many Somos sequences have the property that all of their members are integers. Jim Propp
James Gary Propp is a professor of mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Education and career In high school, Propp was one of the national winners of the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), and an alumnus of the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics. Propp obtained his AB in mathematics in 1982 at Harvard. After advanced study at Cambridge, he obtained his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. He has held professorships at seven universities, including Harvard, MIT, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
