Michael Scott (golfer)
The Hon. Michael Scott OBE (31 August 1878 – 9 January 1959) was an English amateur golfer, most famous for being the oldest winner of The Amateur Championship. Michael Scott was the son of John Scott, 3rd Earl of Eldon, and the youngest of seven children. He attended Winchester College. He emigrated to Australia in about 1900 but returned to the United Kingdom between July 1906 and early 1907, missing the main Australian golf events of 1906. Scott won a number of important amateur tournaments in Australia, including four Australian Amateur titles (1905, 1907, 1909, and 1910), six Victorian Amateur Championship titles (all between 1904 and 1910), and several others. He won the inaugural Australian Open in 1904, and again in 1907. He returned to England in 1911. 1911 Coronation Match
The 1911 Coronation Match was a men's team golf competition between teams of amateur and professional golfers. It was played at Royal St George's Golf Club on 24 June 1911, the Saturday before the 1911 Open Championship, to celebrate the coronation of George V two days earlier. The match replaced the annual England–Scotland Professional Match which had been played just before the Open Championship since 1903. The amateur team consisted of 11 Englishmen, 5 Scotsmen, one Irishman and one American while the professional team consisted of 11 Englishmen, 5 Scotsmen, one Irishman and one Frenchman. The match resulted in an overwhelming win for the professionals by 8 matches to 1, most of the matches being quite one-sided. England–Scotland Amateur Match
The England–Scotland Amateur Match was an annual men's amateur golf competition between teams representing England and Scotland. It was played from 1902 to 1931, although the match lapsed between 1913 and 1921. The match continued after 1931 but as part of the Men's Home Internationals in which Ireland and Wales also competed. Until 1931 it was played in connection with the Amateur Championship, on the Saturday either before or after the championship. History The 1902 match was decided by holes. After the morning round Scotland led in 5 matches, England in 4 with one level. At that point Scotland led by just one hole 14–13. In the afternoon rounds Scotland led in 6 matches, England in 3 with one level. In the afternoon matches alone Scotland won by 6 holes, 18–12. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom. It is organised by the R&A. The Open is one of the four men's major golf tournaments, the others being the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. New South Wales Amateur
The New South Wales Amateur Championship is the state amateur golf championship of New South Wales, Australia. It was first played in 1898. History In early 1898 Lord Hampden, the Governor of New South Wales, presented a solid silver cup to the Royal Sydney and The Australian golf clubs. The two clubs agreed that the cup would be presented to the winner of a 72-hole bogey competition, with 36 holes played on each of the two courses, and be regarded as the amateur championship of New South Wales. Entry was restricted to members of New South Wales clubs. The 1898 championship was won by Hugh MacNeil who finished 14 holes ahead of the runner-up Ted Simpson. MacNeil won again in 1899, this time by an even wider margin, 19 holes, over Simpson. MacNeil was absent in 1900 and the championship was won by Edward Bayly Macarthur by a single hole from Simpson. Surrey Hills Gentlemen's Championship
The Riversdale Cup is the second oldest amateur golf tournament in Australia. It is a Golf Australia national ranking event. The event has been played since 1896 and is organised by and played at the Riversdale Golf Club in Mount Waverley, Victoria. It was known as the Surrey Hills Gentlemen's Championship, Gold Medal from 1896 to 1907, the Riversdale Trophy from 1909 to 1926, and the Riversdale Cup since 1928. The men's event has been played as a 72-hole stroke play tournament since 1958 when Kevin Hartley won for the first time. The All Abilities Riversdale Cup commenced in 2020. Osmund Scott
The Hon. Osmund Scott (24 March 1876 – 9 September 1948) was an English cricketer. He played for Gloucestershire in 1905. Scott was also a golfer; he was runner-up in the 1905 Amateur Championship. Osmund Scott was the son of John Scott, 3rd Earl of Eldon, and the fifth of seven children. He attended Winchester College. Among his siblings were Lady Margaret Scott, an early women's golf champion, and Michael Scott, who won the Amateur Championship in 1933. He married Mary Cecilia Stuart, and had seven children of his own. Scott served in World War I between 1916 and 1918 with the Royal Army Service Corps. British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship
The Women's Amateur Championship, previously known as the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship, was founded in 1893 by the Ladies' Golf Union. It is organised by The R&A, which merged with the Ladies' Golf Union in 2017. Until the dawn of the professional era in 1976, it was the most important golf tournament for women in Great Britain, and attracted players from continental Europe, North America, and the rest of the world. Lady Margaret Rachel Scott (5 April 1874 – 27 January 1938) was a dominant player in early women's golf, who won the first three British Ladies Amateurs in 1893, 1894, and 1895. Scott was a daughter of John Scott, 3rd Earl of Eldon, and the fourth of seven children. The Royal St George's Golf Club located in Sandwich, Kent, England, is a golf club in the United Kingdom and one of the courses on The Open Championship rotation and is the only Open rota golf course to be located in South East England.
