Michael Ratney
Michael Alan Ratney (born 1961) is an American diplomat who is the United States ambassador to Saudi Arabia since April 2023. He previously served as the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Embassy in Israel. Early life and education Raised in Massachusetts, Ratney is a 1979 graduate of Bedford High School. He has a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication from Boston University and a Master of Arts in International Affairs from the George Washington University. Career Ratney is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, with the rank of Minister-Counselor. He joined the service in 1990. He currently serves as the Acting Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute. His most recent assignment before this was Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. Ratney served as the Dean of the School of Language Studies at the Foreign Service Institute. List Of Ambassadors Of The United States To Saudi Arabia
The United States recognized the government of King Ibn Saud in 1931, but it was not until 1939 when it appointed its first U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Bert Fish, then resident in Cairo and ambassador to Egypt. Fish made one trip down to Jeddah in 1940 to meet the King and present his credentials, but it was not until after his mission was terminated that a legation was established there on May 1, 1942. The position was most recently occupied by John Abizaid from June 16, 2019 to January 20, 2021. He presented his credentials to King Salman on June 16, 2019. Senior Foreign Service
The Senior Foreign Service (SFS) comprises the top four ranks of the United States Foreign Service. These ranks were created by the Foreign Service Act of 1980 and Executive Order 12293 in order to provide the Foreign Service with senior grades equivalent to general and flag ranks in the military and naval establishments, respectively, and to grades in the Senior Executive Service.
