Michael Power (bishop)
Michael Power (October 17, 1804 – October 1, 1847) was the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Toronto. Early years Michael Power was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to Captain William and Mary Roach Power, immigrants from Waterford, Ireland. At the age of twelve he was sent to the Seminary of St. Sulpice, Montreal and completed his training at the Seminary of Quebec. He was ordained a priest on August 19, 1827 in Montreal by Bishop John Dubois of New York. He served as a missionary priest of the Archdiocese of Québec and the Diocese of Montréal. Father Power was appointed pastor at Drummondville, where he remained until 1831 when he was sent as pastor to Montebello. From 1833 to 1839 he was pastor of Sainte-Martine, near Valleyfield. Michael Joseph Power
Michael Joseph Power (February 23, 1834 – January 11, 1895) was a businessman and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Halifax County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1882 to 1894 as a Liberal member. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of Michael Power and Anne Lonergan. After studying at the Union Academy in Halifax, he apprenticed as a printer with the ''Acadian Recorder''. Power worked in Boston for a time before returning to Halifax. In 1860, he married Ann Sophia Kent. He opened a liquor retail business and then was a grocer. Power was a captain in the militia and served as a member of Halifax city council and chairman of the board of works. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1878. Power served as speaker for the provincial assembly from 1887 to 1894. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1894. Michael Power is an advertising character (played by Cleveland Mitchell), the cornerstone of a large marketing campaign by the beer company Guinness to promote its products in Africa from 1999 to 2006. By 2003, it became one of the best-known alcohol advertising campaigns in Africa. Jo Foster of the BBC referred to Power as "Africa's very own 'James Bond'". Creation In 1999, the marketing firm Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide was trying to turn Guinness in Africa into what they call a "Lovemark", what they describe as a brand that enjoys "loyalty beyond reason" from consumers. The African market for Guinness at the time was faltering. Saatchi & Saatchi's goal was thus to advertise Guinness to the diverse populations across the continent and to double Guinness sales by 2005.
