Michael Patryn
Michael Patryn (born Omar Dhanani) is an internet entrepreneur and convicted felon. He is best known for being the co-founder of Quadriga Fintech Solutions. History In 2007 he admitted to conspiring in separate criminal cases for burglary, grand larceny, and computer fraud. He was arrested as a part of a sting operation on ShadowCrew by the Secret Service. Patryn had not been using a proxy address; allowing authorities to identify him with the assistance of a confidential informant within the group. After serving time in a U.S. prison, he was subsequently deported to Canada, where he changed his name twice, once to Omar Patryn, before changing it back to Michael Patryn. He publicly denied that the two identities are related, but an investigation by the ''Globe and Mail'' confirmed the name changes with the Canadian government. Quadriga Fintech Solutions was the owner and operator of QuadrigaCX, which was believed to be Canada's largest cryptocurrency exchange. In 2019 the exchange ceased operations and the company filed for bankruptcy with C$215.7 million in liabilities and about C$28 million in assets. The company's CEO and founder, Gerald William Cotten, allegedly died in 2018 after traveling to India. Up to C$250 million (US$190 million) in cryptocurrency owed to 115,000 customers was missing or could not be accessed because only Cotten held the password to off-line cold wallets. ShadowCrew was a cybercrime forum that operated under the domain name ShadowCrew.com between August 2002 and November 2004. Origins The concept of the ShadowCrew was developed in early 2002 during a series of chat sessions between Brett Johnson (GOllumfun), Seth Sanders (Kidd), and Kim Marvin Taylor (MacGayver). The ShadowCrew website also contained a number of sub-forums on the latest information on hacking tricks, social engineering, credit card fraud, virus development, scams, and phishing.
