Michael Moriarty (politician)
Michael Sean Moriarty is a South African politician. He served as the chief whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. He was elected to the legislature in 2009 and resigned from it in 2021. He was also the provincial chairperson of the DA in Gauteng. Moriarty was previously a City of Johannesburg municipal councillor. Moriarty challenged incumbent DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille at the party's Federal Congress in 2020. Zille won the election. Gauteng Provincial Legislature
The Gauteng Provincial Legislature is the legislature of the South African province of Gauteng. It is a unicameral body of 73 members elected every five years. The current legislature, the sixth, was elected on 8 May 2019 and has an African National Congress majority of 37 members. The legislature is housed in Johannesburg City Hall in central Johannesburg. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature, like the eight other provincial legislatures in South Africa, was created on 27 April 1994 by the Interim Constitution of South Africa, which dissolved the four original provinces (and their provincial councils) and created the nine current provinces. She has served as the Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance since 20 October 2019. 2020 Democratic Alliance Federal Congress
The Democratic Alliance (DA) held its leadership conference virtually between 31 October and 1 November 2020. It was originally scheduled to be held in May 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The previous congress was held in 2018. Mpho Phalatse (born 7 November 1977) is a South African medical doctor and politician who is the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she has served in the position since 22 November 2021. She is the first woman to serve as mayor of the metropolitan municipality, which was established in 2000.
