Michael Mayes (American Football)
Michael Oneal Mayes (born August 17, 1966) is a former American football defensive back who played professionally in the National Football League (NFL). Mayes was born in DeRidder, Louisiana and attended DeRidder High School. He played collegiately at LSU and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round of the 1989 NFL Draft, the 106th overall pick. In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. 1989 NFL Draft
The 1989 NFL draft was the procedure by which National Football League teams selected amateur college football players. It is officially known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting. The draft was held April 23–24, 1989, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, New York. The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. Four of the first five players selected in the draft – quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Barry Sanders, linebacker Derrick Thomas, and cornerback Deion Sanders – would be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
