Michael Maher (hurler)
Michael Maher (1930 – 8 March 2017) was an Irish hurler and Gaelic games administrator. His league and championship career with the Tipperary senior team spanned fifteen seasons from 1951 to 1966. Born in Holycross, County Tipperary, Maher was born into a strong hurling family. His uncle, Mikey Maher, was a five-time All-Ireland medal winner with Tipperary between 1895 and 1900, while his cousin, Sonny Maher, won three successive All-Ireland medals between 1949 and 1951. Maher played competitive hurling during his secondary education at Thurles CBS. He later joined the Holycross–Ballycahill team, winning his first senior county championship medal as an eighteen-year-old in 1948. Maher added two more championship medals to his collection in 1951 and 1954. Maher made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he was selected for the Tipperary minor team. Holycross–Ballycahill GAA
Holycross–Ballycahill GAA is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "Mid-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club that is centred on the villages of Holycross and Ballycahill and is located around five miles outside Thurles. History The club was founded in 1885. Holycross–Ballycahill GAA club compete in the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. The period from 1947 to 1953 was the club's golden era. Four Mid Tipperary Senior Titles and three Senior County Tipperary titles in 1948, 1951 and 1954, under the captaincy of Francis Maher. A Mid Senior title was won in 1966, before the club reverted to the Junior ranks in 1971. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. Presently, Ulster hold the record for the most football Railway Cup wins with 30, while Munster has won the most hurling titles with 43. Larry Keane
Laurence Keane (1931 - 16 July 2017) was an Irish hurler. At club level he played with Thurles Sarsfields and was also a member of the Tipperary senior hurling team. Career Keane first played hurling at juvenile and underage levels with Thurles Sarsfields. He subsequently progressed onto the club's senior team, with his career coinciding with an unprecedented era of success for the club. Between 1952 and 1963 Keane won nine Tipperary SHC titles, including one as team captain in 1957. He also won a Tipperary SFC with Thurles Crokes in 1960. Keane first played for Tipperary during a two-year tenure with the minor team. He won an All-Ireland MHC medal in 1949 after a defeat of Kilkenny in the final. Donie Nealon
Donie Nealon (born December 1935) is an Irish former hurler who played as a right corner-forward at senior level for the Tipperary county team. Born in Newtown, County Tipperary, Nealon first played competitive hurling whilst at school in St Flannan's College. He made his first impression on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty he joined the Tipperary junior team. He made his senior debut during the 1958 championship. Nealon went on to play a key role for Tipperary for over a decade, and won five All-Ireland medals, eight Munster medals and six National Hurling League medals. Nealon was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team at various times throughout his career, Nealon won four Railway Cup medals. Liam Devaney
Liam Devaney (1935 – 15 August 2017) was an Irish hurler. His league and championship career with the Tipperary senior team spanned fourteen seasons from 1954 until 1968. Born in Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, Devaney was born into a strong hurling family. His father, Jim Devaney, was a stalwart of the Borris–Ileigh club and was a member of the Tipperary senior panel that won the All-Ireland title in 1937. Devaney first came to prominence as a hurler at underage levels with the Borris-Ileigh club before making his debut with the club's adult team in 1952. In a 22-year club career he won a county senior championship medal in 1953, as well as four divisional senior championship medals. Devaney made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he was selected for the Tipperary minor team. Roscrea GAA
Roscrea () is a market town in County Tipperary, Ireland, which in 2016 had a population of 5,446. Roscrea is one of the oldest towns in Ireland, having developed around the 7th century monastery of Saint Crónán of Roscrea, parts of which remain preserved today. Roscrea is a designated ''Irish Heritage Town'' due to the extent of important historical buildings that are preserved in the town. Amongst the most notable buildings of interest are the 13th century Roscrea Castle and Damer House on Castle Street. Within the town are the remains of the ancient Romanesque doorway and gable-end of St Cronan's church. The Round Tower and the High cross of the ancient monastery are also located nearby.
