Michael Lucas (political Activist)
Michael Lucas (born Michael Lukac; March 7, 1926 — May 4, 2020) was an artist, designer and political activist based in Toronto, Ontario. He was the Chair of the executive committee of the Canadian Friends of Soviet People, founded in 1991, and was formerly the chair of the USSR-Canada Friendship Association from 1972 until 1991. He was also the chair of the International Council of Friendship and Solidarity with Soviet People, operating out of Toronto. He was also a longtime leader of the Carpatho-Russian Society and was a longtime member of the Communist Party of Canada since his youth. He was also editor-in-chief of the ''Northstar Compass'', the monthly magazine, published from 1991 until 2017, first by the Canadian Friends of Soviet People and then by the International Council of Friendship with Soviet People. Vyšná Jablonka
Vyšná Jablonka ( rue, Вышня Яблiнка; hu, Felsőalmád) is a village and municipality in Humenné District in the Prešov Region of north-east Slovakia. History The earliest mention of the village was in the "List of property" of the Lords of Humenne in 1436. From the beginning it was a foresters' village, what appeared until the present day. The fourth period mayor of the village is Emília Čopaková. From the nearly 700 inhabitants (1828 – 91 houses; 678 inhabitants) only 50 are now having their living place in Vyšná Jablonka. Once there used to be also a watermill, that you can nowadays see at the exposition of folk architecture of the Hummené museum. Naturalized Citizens Of Canada
Naturalization (or naturalisation) is the legal act or process by which a non-citizen of a country may acquire citizenship or nationality of that country. It may be done automatically by a statute, i.e., without any effort on the part of the individual, or it may involve an application or a motion and approval by legal authorities. Dyson Carter
Herbert Dyson Carter (February 2, 1910 – 1996), known as Dyson Carter, was a Canadian scientist, lecturer, writer, and Communist propagandist and organiser who served as president of the Canadian-Soviet Friendship Society from 1949 to 1960. During his fifty-year writing career, Carter produced hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles, dozens of short stories, and 17 books including five novels. Many of his non-fiction books and articles popularized scientific ideas and discoveries or reported on medical advances. In the 1930s and 1940s, many of his articles appeared in popular magazines in Canada and the United States and three of his books were published by large commercial publishers in the United States and widely reviewed. Raymond Leslie Stevenson (December 17, 1919 – August 24, 2004) was a Canadian writer and political activist. He was an executive member of the International Council for Friendship and Solidarity with Soviet People and Associate and Editor of ''Northstar Compass'' – the organization's print publication. Stevenson worked on ''Northstar Compass'' for over thirteen years. Stevenson was an executive member of the World Peace Congress and a trade union organizer. Stevenson was a member of the Communist Party of Canada from 1940 to 1998, serving for many years on its Central Committee and many of its Commissions. Vic Ratsma
Wieste (Vic) Ratsma (1934–2004) was a journalist and political activist. Born in the Netherlands, he came to Canada and worked as a quality control inspector for the Canada Post while raising his family in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has been described as a "lifelong political activist, antiwar organizer, poet and essayist," but argued that he was not qualified to be called a poet. He stated that he would prefer to be labeled as a person who "occasionally writes some poetry as well". For a number of years, he was active in the labor movement and graduated from the university-Labor program at the University of Manitoba. He was a member of the New Democratic Party and ran for political office twice. In 1975, he joined the Canada-USSR Friendship Association, and was the secretary of the Winnipeg branch for many years. Prague Spring
The Prague Spring ( cs, Pražské jaro, sk, Pražská jar) was a period of political liberalization and mass protest in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. It began on 5 January 1968, when reformist Alexander Dubček was elected First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ), and continued until 21 August 1968, when the Soviet Union and most of Warsaw Pact members invaded the country to suppress the reforms. The Prague Spring reforms were a strong attempt by Dubček to grant additional rights to the citizens of Czechoslovakia in an act of partial decentralization of the economy and democratization. The freedoms granted included a loosening of restrictions on the media, speech and travel.
