Michael Herbert
Michael Herbert (17 May 1925 – 20 June 2006) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. Career A publican from Castleconnell, County Limerick, he unsuccessfully contested the 1965 general election and was first elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1969 general election as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Limerick East constituency. He was re-elected for the constituency until the 1981 general election when he did not stand for re-election. He was again unsuccessful in the November 1982 election. While a TD, Herbert served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1973 to 1979, being appointed to Ireland's first delegation, second delegation and third delegation. In the first direct elections to the European Parliament in December 1979 he stood in the Munster constituency but was not elected. He played hurling as a full-back with the Limerick Senior Hurling team, with whom he won a National Hurling League medal in 1947, and also with his local club Ahane. ... A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. ''Fianna'' ( , ; singular ''Fian''; gd, Fèinne ) were small warrior-hunter bands in Gaelic Ireland during the Iron Age and early Middle Ages. All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887. The final, currently held on the third Sunday in August, is the culmination of a series of games played during July and August, with the winning team receiving the Liam MacCarthy Cup. For the majority of its existence, the All-Ireland Championship has been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses they are eliminated from the championship. Tony Herbert
Matthew Anthony Herbert (9 August 1920 – 6 March 2014) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and hurler, who played as a full-forward for the Limerick senior team. Biography Born in Castleconnell, County Limerick, Herbert first played competitive hurling while at school in Limerick CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Limerick minor team. He made his senior debut during the 1939 Oireachtas Cup. Herbert went on to play a key role for Limerick for a brief period, before later joining the Dublin senior team, and won one All-Ireland medal, two Leinster medals and one Munster medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team at various times throughout his career, Herbert ended his career without a Railway Cup medal. Seán Herbert
Seán Herbert (born 1923) is an Irish retired sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Ahane and with the Limerick senior inter-county team from 1942 until 1953. Playing career Club Herbert played his club hurling with the famous Ahane club in Limerick, and won his first senior county title in 1942 in the company of fellow player Mick Mackey. It was the first of seven county championship victories in-a-row for Herbert and his club. He won an eighth county medal in 1955. Inter-county Herbert's performances with his club brought him to the attention of the Limerick selectors. He made his senior debut for the team in 1942. Two years later in 1944 Herbert lined out in his first Munster final. Cork, a team attempting to capture a fourth successive All-Ireland title, provided the opposition. Ahane GAA
Ahane GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the Ahane, Castleconnell and Montpelier areas of east County Limerick, Republic of Ireland. The club fields teams in both hurling and football and historically is regarded as one of the great clubs of Limerick. Some other class players were the Mackey brothers, Mick and John and Jackie Power among others. A few of the Ahane players won the All-Ireland Senior hurling championship in 1934, 1936 and 1940 with Limerick, their leader being the peerless Mick Mackey, regarded as one of Ireland's greatest hurlers of all time. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league.
