Michael Halford
Major-General Michael Charles Kirkpatrick Halford, (28 October 1914 – 4 January 1999) was a British Army officer. Military career Halford was commissioned into the York and Lancaster Regiment on 30 August 1934. He served as commanding officer of the Hallamshire Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment during the Italian campaign of the Second World War for which he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire and a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. After the war, he became commander of 147th Infantry Brigade in July 1960, chief of staff at Western Command in July 1963 and General Officer Commanding 43rd (Wessex) Division/District in December 1964 before retiring in February 1967. South West District (British Army)
South West District was a district command of the British Army between 1967 and 1995. History The district was formed from 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division as part of the Territorial Army Volunteer Reserve in 1967. It had its headquarters at Bulford Camp, Wiltshire, and was placed under the command of HQ United Kingdom Land Forces in 1972. In 1984-85 the district controlled a number of individual units, including 94th Locating Regiment, Royal Artillery at Roberts Barracks, Larkhill; the Support Regiment RA; Headquarters 7 Regiment Army Air Corps; the UK contingent of the ACE Mobile Force; 1st Infantry Brigade at Tidworth; 43 Wessex Brigade in Exeter; and five planned companies of the Home Service Force. Major-General Thomas Heward Acton, (12 June 1917 – 22 January 1977) was a British Army officer. Military career Acton was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own) in the late 1930s and was mentioned in dispatches for his service during the Second World War. After the war, he became commander of 126th Infantry Brigade in October 1963, General Officer Commanding South West District in February 1967 and then Commander of Land Forces in Northern Ireland in February 1970 during the Troubles. He went on to be Chief of Staff at HQ Northern Ireland in July 1970 before retiring in May 1971. Western Command was a command of the British Army. History Western Command was established in 1905 and was originally called the Welsh & Midland Command before changing its name in 1906. In 1907 Western Command relocated to Watergate House, Chester, Watergate House in Chester.
