Michael Grant (judge)
Michael Patrick Grant (born 24 January 1963) is an Australian judge, who has been the Chief Justice of the Northern Territory since 2016. Grant was born in Darwin in 1963, and educated at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill in Sydney. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws with first class honours from the University of Queensland. He practised as a solicitor from 1993, while also working as a lecturer in torts and taxation law at Northern Territory University. In 1997, Grant worked as director of litigation in the office of the Attorney-General of the Northern Territory. Queen's Counsel
In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Technically appointed by the monarch of the country to be one of 'His [Her] Majesty's Counsel learned in the law', the position originated in England and Wales. Some Commonwealth countries have either abolished the position, or renamed it so as to remove monarchical connotations, for example, 'Senior counsel' or 'Senior Advocate'. From 1911–1974 the Northern Territory had only one resident judge. Relief was provided by Commonwealth of Australia, Commonwealth judges from 1961 to 1976, and by Federal Court of Australia, Federal Court judges from 1976 to 1978.
