Michael Gallagher (translator)
Michael Gallagher (born 1930) is an author and translator of Japanese literature. His translation of Yukio Mishima's ''Spring Snow'' was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1973, while his nonfiction work ''Laws of Heaven'' was the winner of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Book Award in Theology. As a Society of Jesus, Jesuit scholastic, he spent three years teaching English at St. Xavier High School (Cincinnati), St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he directed several plays, including ''The Teahouse of the August Moon (play), The Teahouse of the August Moon''. He left the Jesuit order and served briefly as a paratrooper in Korean War, Korea. Japanese Literature
Japanese literature throughout most of its history has been influenced by cultural contact with neighboring Asian literatures, most notably China and its literature. ''The Sea and Poison'' () is a 1957 Japanese short novel written by Shūsaku Endō. Plot The story is set in Fukuoka hospital during the late stages of World War II, when Japan is demoralized by constant air raids. The intern Dr. Suguro participated in a series of medical experiments designed by an ambitious senior surgeon, Toda, involving vivisection of captured American airmen. Formally, the purpose of the experiments are to determine how much lung tissue can be removed before the patient dies, and how much saline and air can be injected into the blood before death occurs, both are crucial knowledge in the treatment of tuberculosis, a disease currently ravaging the country. However, the real motivation of these chilling experiments arises from military brutality, competition among hospital department heads, and an atmosphere of nihilism in the face of closing defeat. Akiyuki Nosaka
was a Japanese novelist, singer, lyricist, and member of the House of Councillors. As a broadcasting writer he used the name and his alias as a chanson singer was . Early life Nosaka was born in Kamakura, Kanagawa, the son of Sukeyuki Nosaka, who was an official of the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Construction. Together with his sisters he grew up as an adopted child of a Harimaya family in Nada, Kobe, Hyōgo. His foster mother, Aiko, was his maternal aunt. Nosaka is part of the "Generation of the Ashes" (), which includes other writers like Kenzaburō Ōe and Makoto Oda. One of his sisters died as the result of malnutrition, and his adoptive father died during the 1945 bombing of Kobe in World War II. Another sister died of malnutrition in Fukui.
