Michael Forlong (1912–2000) was a New Zealand writer, producer and director. National Film Unit
The National Film Unit (NFU) was a state-owned film-production organisation originally based in Miramar, New Zealand. Founded in 1936 when the government took over a private film studio, Filmcraft, the NFU produced newsreels, documentaries and promotional films about New Zealand, and for many years was the only significant film-production facility in the country. Many people who became prominent in the development of the modern New Zealand film industry were trained by the NFU (for example, the actor Sam Neill started at the NFU as a director). During World War II, the NFU had a brief to provide war-time information and propaganda to further the war effort. The NFU produced the ''Weekly Review'', a weekly magazine-style film journal that was distributed free to New Zealand's cinemas. Other productions included short documentaries about the war effort. ''Rangi's Catch'' is a 1972 children's adventure film directed by Michael Forlong. It was based on a book by Margaret Ford. The eponymous role is played by a young Temuera Morrison in his first role. Originally made as eight episodes for television, it was re-edited and re-cut for a theatrical release. The series was also broadcast in Czechoslovakia with dubbing in Slovak language during the 70's & 80's (Rangiho úlovok) Plot Four children on a remote sheep station in the South Island of New Zealand hear of the escape of two convicts, and realise that the crooks are responsible for burgling their house while they were swimming. One Hundred Crowded Years
''One Hundred Crowded Years'' is a 1940 New Zealand historical documentary film. It was produced by the government film studios at Miramar for the centenary of New Zealand. Cinemas agreed to air the film without charge to the government, and to donate the sixpence fee from children to "patriotic funds". About 8,000 schoolchildren in Wellington saw the film, raising £200 for those funds. However, not all showings were well-attended. One showing was cancelled because the local body did not allow screenings on Sundays. Another local council rescinded its ban on Sunday screenings to allow this film to be shown.
