Michael Fleming Folland
Michael Fleming Folland (April 15, 1949 – July 3, 1969) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War. Biography Folland was born in Richmond, Virginia, April 15, 1949. He joined the Army in 1968, and by July 3, 1969, was serving as a Corporal in Company D, 2d Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 199th Infantry Brigade. During a firefight on that day, in Long Khanh Province, South Vietnam, during Operation Toan Thang III, Folland smothered the blast of an enemy-thrown hand grenade with his body, sacrificing his life to protect those around him. Folland, aged 20 at his death, was buried at Glendale National Cemetery in his hometown of Richmond. Operation Toan Thang III
Operation Toan Thang III ("Complete Victory") was a U.S. Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) operation conducted between 17 February and 31 October 1969 in the Vietnam War. The operation was designed to keep pressure on Vietcong (VC) and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces in III Corps. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. The Institute of Heraldry remains within the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. A grenade is an explosive weapon typically thrown by hand (also called hand grenade), but can also refer to a shell (explosive projectile) shot from the muzzle of a rifle (as a rifle grenade) or a grenade launcher. A modern hand grenade generally consists of an explosive charge ("filler"), a detonator mechanism, an internal striker to trigger the detonator, and a safety lever secured by a cotter pin.
