Michael Dunne (MP)
Michael Dunne (1800 – 20 September 1876) was an Irish Liberal, Whig and Independent Irish Party politician. He was a farmer and lived in Ballymanus, Stradbally, Queen's County, a house and land the family rented from the Grattans. Michael's son William Dunne (1843-1915) was a racehorse trainer and bred two consecutive Irish Derby The Irish Derby (Irish: Dearbaí na hÉireann) is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 ... winners (Soulouque in 1879 and King of the Bees in 1880) and Cortolvin who went on to win the 1867 Grand National. Michael was a Justice of the Peace. Dunne became an Independent Irish Party MP for Queen's County at the 1852 general election and, standing as a Whig in 1857 and a Liberal in 1859, held the seat until 1865 when he did not seek re-election. The Irish Derby (Irish: Dearbaí na hÉireann) is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs (2,414 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late June or early July. It is Ireland's equivalent of the Epsom Derby, and it is currently held three weeks after the English race. History The earliest version of the Irish Derby was an event called the O'Darby Stakes. This was established in 1817, but it was discontinued after 1824. A subsequent race titled the Curragh Derby was inaugurated in 1848, but this was again short-lived. The Independent Irish Party (IIP) was the designation chosen by the 48 Members of the United Kingdom Parliament returned from Ireland with the endorsement of the Tenant Right League in the general election of 1852. The League had secured their promise to offer an independent opposition (refusing all government favour and office) to the dominant landlord interest, and to advance an agrarian reform programme popularly summarised as the "three F's": fair rent, fixed tenure and free sale. The unity of the grouping was compromised by the priority the majority gave to repealing the Ecclesiastical Titles Act, legislation passed by the Liberal government of Lord John Russell to hamper the restoration in the United Kingdom of a Roman Catholic episcopate, and their independence by the defection of two their leading members to a new Whig-Peelite government.
