Michael Duffy (born 1957) is an Australian writer and former editor and publisher. He edited ''The Independent Monthly'', a general magazine owned by Max Suich and John B Fairfax, from 1993 to 1996. Then he and his wife Alex Snellgrove set up a publishing company, Duffy & Snellgrove, that published the first books by Peter Robb, John Birmingham and Rosalie Ham. Other authors included Les Murray, Mungo MacCallum and John Olsen. The company stopped publishing new titles in 2005. Duffy presented ABC Radio National's ''Counterpoint'' with Paul Comrie-Thomson and wrote for News Limited publications and then the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun Herald The ''Sun Herald'' is a U.S. newspaper based in Biloxi, Mississippi, that serves readers along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Michael Duffy (Australian Politician)
Michael John Duffy (born 2 March 1938) is a former Australian politician who served as an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives for the Division of Holt from 1980 to 1996. He was Minister for Communications from 1983 to 1987, Minister for Trade Negotiations from 1987 to 1990 and the Attorney-General from 1990 to 1993. On 6 February 1990, in recognition of work on the Closer Economic Relations agreement between Australia and New Zealand Duffy was the first Australian and fifteenth appointee to The Order of New Zealand. In 1990 he was also awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal. He retired from politics prior to the 1996 election which was held on his 58th birthday. Michael Duffy is a naval historian, specialising in the Napoleonic war period. He is reader in British history and director of the Centre for Maritime Historical Studies at the University of Exeter. Academic career Duffy earned his BA in history, MA, and DPhil in history at the University of Oxford. Appointed to the faculty of the University of Exeter, he has been assistant lecturer, lecturer, senior lecturer, head of history and dean of arts. Appointed director of the Centre for Maritime Historical Studies in 1991, he was promoted to reader in British history in 2001. Michael Dennis Duffy (born May 27, 1946) is a former Canadian senator and former Canadian television journalist. Prior to his appointment to the upper house in 2008, he was the Ottawa editor for CTV News Channel. In turning 75 on May 27, 2021, Duffy retired from the senate due to mandatory retirement rules. Early life Mike Duffy was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Lillian and Wilfrid Duffy. He is the grandson of Charles Gavan Duffy, a PEI Liberal MLA and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. Duffy studied humanities at St. Dunstan's College. Michael Duffy (born 28 July 1994) is an Irish footballer who plays for League of Ireland Premier Division side Derry City. His previous clubs include Celtic, Alloa Athletic, Dundee & Dundalk. Club career Derry City Duffy is a product of the Derry City youth team and made his first appearance for the senior team at Richmond Park on 3 September 2012 as a second-half substitute in a 3–0 defeat to St Patrick's Athletic. Michael Duffy (1848 or 1849 - 4 February 1926) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Duffy was born in Westmeath, Ireland, the son of John Duffy and arrived in Queensland in 1865. He was a general bushworker in western Queensland before settling in Bundaberg in 1873 where he first worked as a storekeeper. He leased a wharf in 1878 and from 1880-1888 was an Australia Steam navigation agent and later on was a partner in a sugar company. He retired to Sydney in 1908.
