Michael D. Smigiel Sr.
Michael D. Smigiel Sr. (June 18, 1958 – August 28, 2022) was an American politician who was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, where he represented District 36, which covers Caroline, Cecil, Kent, and Queen Anne's Counties. He was first elected in 2002 along with fellow Republicans Richard Sossi and Mary Roe Walkup after the legislative boundaries were redrawn. Prior to 2002, District 36 had a separate representative for Cecil, Kent, and Queen Anne's Counties. After combining the districts, Smigiel won the seat previously occupied by former Elkton Mayor, James Crouse. Crouse was appointed to the seat in July 2001 following Governor Parris Glendenning's appointment of longtime Elkton Delegate Ronald A. Guns to the Public Service Commission. Maryland's Legislative District 36 is one of 47 districts in the state for the Maryland General Assembly. It covers Kent County, Queen Anne's County, and parts of Caroline County and Cecil County. Demographic characteristics As of the 2020 United States census, the district had a population of 129,429, of whom 101,733 (78.6%) were of voting age. The racial makeup of the district was 103,031 (79.6%) White, 11,859 (9.2%) African American, 414 (0.3%) Native American, 1,613 (1.2%) Asian, 40 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 4,190 (3.2%) from some other race, and 8,282 (6.4%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8,428 (6.5%) of the population. Northern Illinois University College of Law (NIU Law) is one of four public law schools in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is one of two public law schools in the Chicago area. The College of Law was founded as the Lewis University College of Law in Glen Ellyn, Illinois in 1975. ''The Daily Times'' is a morning daily English-language (broadsheet) publication based in Salisbury, Maryland, and primarily covers Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset counties, and regional coverage across the Delmarva Peninsula. It has been a Gannett publication since 2002. The online news product is Delmarva Now. History ''The Daily Times'' was first owned by the Truitt family of Salisbury, Maryland. Andrew Peter Harris (born January 25, 1957) is an American politician and physician who has been the U.S. representative for since 2011. The district includes the entire Eastern Shore, as well as several eastern exurbs of Baltimore. He is currently the only Republican member of Maryland's congressional delegation. Harris previously served in the Maryland Senate. Early life, education, and career Harris's father was Zoltán Harris, an anesthesiologist who was born in Miskolc, Hungary, in 1911 and emigrated to the United States in 1950; his mother, Irene (Koczerzuk), was born in Zarice, Poland.
