Michael Collins (soccer)
Michael Collins (born in Hicksville, New York) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a midfielder. Collins played for at least twelve teams in nearly half a dozen leagues over his seventeen-year career. He also earned two caps with the United States national team in 1988. Collins currently serves as president and general manager of California United Strikers FC. Youth and college Collins grew up in Hicksville, New York where he played on the Hicksville Americans youth club. In 1979, the Americans went to the McGuire Cup final where it lost to Imo's Pizza of St. Louis, Missouri. Collins also played soccer at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, New York. Following his graduation of St. John's in 1979, he spent the fall semester playing college soccer at Mercy College before turning professional. Hicksville, New York
Hicksville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York. The population of the CDP was 41,547 at the 2010 census. History Valentine Hicks, son-in-law of abolitionist and Quaker preacher Elias Hicks, and eventual president of the Long Island Rail Road, bought land in the village in 1834 and turned it into a station stop on the LIRR in 1837. The station became a depot for produce, particularly cucumbers for a Heinz Company plant. After a blight destroyed the cucumber crops, the farmers grew potatoes. Sacramento Knights
Sacramento Knights were an indoor soccer team that played from 1993 to 2001 in ARCO Arena and were owned by the NBA's Sacramento Kings. The team played in the Continental Indoor Soccer League from 1993 to 1997. The team then moved to the World Indoor Soccer League in 1998 after the CISL folded. The team itself folded when the WISL merged with the Major Indoor Soccer League in 2001. Personnel The Knights were coached by retired English player Keith Weller from 1994 to 1997. Iain Fraser took over as head coach in 1998 as the team reformed in the Premier Soccer Alliance. CISL award winners include Mike Dowler, 1996 goalkeeper of the year. Sean Bowers was the 1993 Defender of the Year, and Danny Pena won the same award with the club in 1995. United Soccer League (USL), formerly known as United Soccer Leagues, is a soccer league in the United States and Canada. It organizes several men's and women's leagues, both professional and amateur. Men's leagues currently organized are the USL Championship, USL League One, USL League Two, and the youth Super Y League. A new women's league, the USL W League, began play in 2022. The United Soccer League was a professional soccer league in the United States in the mid-1980s. History As the second incarnation of the American Soccer League was crumbling, five of the eight ASL teams (Carolina Lightnin', renamed the Charlotte Gold, Dallas Americans, Jacksonville Tea Men, Oklahoma City Slickers, renamed Stampede, and Rochester Flash) left to founded the USL. They also took the ASL's commissioner, William Burfeind, with them as their first commissioner. Fiscal responsibility, regional rivalries and measured expansion were a few of the cornerstones on which the organization was to be structured. A league rule allowed only four of eighteen roster spots be taken by foreign players. In addition a salary cap was imposed on member clubs. is an American professional soccer club based in Orange County, California. History The club was founded by Bronwyn & Pete Capriotti and Michael Collins, who have had connections to the adult amateur United Premier Soccer League. California United FC intended to join the North American Soccer League (NASL) as an expansion franchise for the 2018 season. However, due to the instability of the league, California United withdrew its franchise agreement from NASL in early 2018 and announced that it was exploring all professional league options for the 2019 season. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap.
