Michael Brand (composer)
Michael Brand (born 1952) is an English orchestral conductor and composer, also known for his work with members of Van der Graaf Generator. He previously worked as a radio producer for the BBC. Early life Brand was born in England in 1952, the son of the composer Geoffrey Brand. He was educated at Haberdashers' Aske's School, and read music at University College, Oxford, graduating in 1974. After a stint as a freelance conductor and arranger, Brand worked as a producer for BBC Radio from 1979. During his BBC tenure, he produced BBC Radio 2 programmes, including those presented by David Hamilton, Brian Matthew, and Ray Moore. He left the BBC in 1982 to devote himself fully to his music. Composing Many of his compositions are published by the firm of G & M Brand Publications, which he runs with his father, Geoffrey. Orchestral Conductor
Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance, such as an orchestral or Choir, choral concert. It has been defined as "the art of directing the simultaneous performance of several players or singers by the use of gesture." Buckinghamshire County Council
Buckinghamshire County Council was the upper-tier local authority for the administrative county and later the non-metropolitan county of Buckinghamshire, in England, the United Kingdom established in 1889 following the Local Government Act 1888. The county council's offices were in Aylesbury. The county council borders changed several times, most notably in 1974 when the council lost the territory of Colnbrook, Datchet, Eton, Horton, Slough and Wraysbury to Berkshire. In 1997 it lost the Borough of Milton Keynes, which became a unitary authority remaining within the ceremonial county of Buckinghamshire. The council consisted of 49 councillors. The Climber (album)
''The Climber'' is the seventh solo album by Judge Smith, and after ''Curly's Airships'' (2000) his second "songstory". It is vocal music, accompanied by a double bass. The album is sung by Smith and a male-voice choir called The Fløyen Voices. Story ''The Climber'' tells the story of a lonely British mountaineer who visits the Italian Alps in the mid-20th century who sees mountain climbing as a romantic conquest. The local community however see it as something dangerous. The mountaineer wishes to climb a mountain all by himself, but the local community won't let him, so he sneaks out as they aren't watching. But on the mountain he gets surprised by the weather, and freezes into a state between life and death, forcing the local community to go out and save him. Judge Smith
Christopher John Judge Smith (born 1 July 1948), is an English songwriter, author, composer and performer, and a founder member of progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. Initially working under the name Chris Judge Smith, he has been known simply as Judge Smith since 1994. After Van der Graaf Generator, he has written songs, stage musicals and operas, and from the early 1990s on he has released a number of solo CDs, including three "Songstories". Over (album)
''Over'' is the sixth studio album by the English singer and songwriter Peter Hammill, released on Charisma Records in April 1977. It was issued for the first time on CD on Virgin Records in the early 1990s, and was reissued again in a remastered version in 2006 with bonus tracks. The album details the break-up of a long-term relationship with a woman known as Alice. The album was originally to be called ''Over My Shoulder'' with a different cover shot in which Hammill was caught looking back over his shoulder with a very mixed expression. The album was recorded during a period of line-up change for Hammill's band Van der Graaf Generator. It features VdGG drummer Guy Evans, VdGG's future recruit Graham Smith (formerly of String Driven Thing) on violin, and the return of VdGG's bass player from 1969 to 1970, Nic Potter. Peter Joseph Andrew Hammill (born 5 November 1948) is an English musician and recording artist. He was a founder member of the progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. Best known as a singer/songwriter, he also plays guitar and piano and produces his own recordings and occasionally those of other artists. In 2012, he was recognised with the Visionary award at the first Progressive Music Awards.
