Michael Barry (cyclist)
Michael Barry (born 18 December 1975) is a Canadian author and former professional road racing cyclist. Barry raced for numerous world-class teams with the role of 'domestique'. His greatest personal successes were placing eighth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics' road race, finishing second in the Canadian National Road Race Championships in 2001 and 2012, and winning a stage of the Tour of Missouri in 2008. He announced his retirement in September 2012, stating that the 2012 Tour of Beijing would be his last race. He is also an author who has written three books. Career He was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. His father, Michael (Mike) Barry Sr., was a racer himself in England in the 1950s, who until 2006 ran a specialty bike store and manufactured a line of hand-made bicycle frames under his own Mariposa brand. 2011 Tour De Romandie
The 2011 Tour de Romandie, was the 65th running of the Tour de Romandie cycling stage race. It started on 26 April in Martigny and ended on 1 May in Geneva and consisted of six stages, including a race-commencing prologue stage and also a penultimate day individual time trial. It was the 13th race of the 2011 UCI World Tour season. The race was won by rider Cadel Evans, who claimed the leader's yellow jersey for the second time – having previously won the race in 2006 – with an eighth-place finish on the penultimate time trial stage, and held his advantage to the end of the race. Cycling Domestique
In road bicycle racing, a domestique is a rider who works for the benefit of their team and leader, rather than trying to win the race. In French, ''domestique'' translates as "servant".However, in French, the term used is ''équipier''. In Italy and Spain, the term used is ''gregario'' (meaning "soldier of the Roman legions" or "one of the group", seetymology. In Belgium and the Netherlands the term ''knecht'' (meaning "servant" or "helper" in Dutch) is used. The use of the term dates back to 1911, although such riders had existed before then. The Tour of Austria (german: Internationale Österreich Rundfahrt) is a stage cycling race held in Austria. From 1949 to 1995 it was a race for amateur cyclists, turning into a professional event in 1996. 2004 Vuelta A España
The 59th edition of the ''Vuelta a España'' (Tour of Spain), a long-distance Bicycle racing, bicycle Stage (bicycle race), stage race and one of the three Grand Tour (cycling), grand tours, was held from 4 September to 26 September 2004. It consisted of 21 stages covering a total of , and was won by Roberto Heras of the Liberty Seguros cycling team. Halfway through the 2004 Vuelta, it appeared it would become an easy win for Heras, but in the last week his fellow countryman Santiago Pérez (cyclist), Santiago Pérez won two heavy mountain stages, thus becoming an important rival. Eventually Heras won with only 30 seconds advantage on Pérez. 2003 UCI Road World Championships
The 2003 UCI Road World Championships took place in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, between October 7 and October 12, 2003. The event consisted of a road race and a time trial for men, women, men under 23, junior men and junior women. David Millar was handed a two-year ban and stripped of his world time trial title by the British cycling federation for taking the banned performance enhancer EPO. Following this disqualification, the UCI declared Michael Rogers as the winner with the silver medal going to Uwe Peschel and the bronze to Michael Rich. The 2002 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XVII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Manchester 2002 were held in Manchester, England, from 25 July to 4 August, 2002.
