Mezőkovácsháza ( hu, Mezőkovácsházai járás) is a district in southern part of Békés County. ''Mezőkovácsháza'' is also the name of the town where the district seat is found. The district is located in the Southern Great Plain Statistical Region. Geography Mezőkovácsháza District borders with Békéscsaba District to the north, Gyula District to the northeast, the Romanian county of Arad to the east and south, Makó District ''(Csongrád County)'' and Orosháza District to the west. The number of the inhabited places in Mezőkovácsháza District is 18. Municipalities The district has 4 towns, 2 large villages and 12 villages. Districts of Hungary are the second-level divisions of Hungary after counties. They replaced the 175 subregions of Hungary in 2013. Altogether, there are 174 districts in the 19 counties, and there are 23 districts in Budapest. Pusztaottlaka (''Puszta-Ott·lak·a''; ro, Otlaca-Pustă) is a village in Békés County, in the Southern Great Plain region of south-east Hungary. Geography It covers an area of 18.88 km² and has a population of 471 people (2002). Population According to the last census in 2015 Pusztaottlaka/Otlaca-Pusta had a population of 474 people. Mezőhegyes
Mezőhegyes is a town in Békés county, in the Southern Great Plain region of south-east Hungary. It is home to the Hungarian State Stud ( hu, italic=no, Mezőhegyesi Állami Ménes), founded in 1784 and famous for its Nonius, Furioso-North Star and Gidran breeds of horse. Geography It covers an area of 155.5 km² and has a population of 6355 people (2007). History The Austrian Imperial and Hungarian Royal Apostolic Stud was founded in late 1784 in Mezőhegyes by Emperor Joseph II. As a result, the name of Mezőhegyes became interwoven with the concept of horses. It was here that the Nonius, later on the Gidan, the Furioso and the North Star types of horses and the Mezőhegyes English full bood were bred. Medgyesegyháza
Medgyesegyháza ( sk, Medeš) is a town in Békés County, in the Southern Great Plain region of south-east Hungary. Geography It covers an area of 64.32 km2 and has a population of 3558 people (2015). History The Jews in the city The Jewish community in the city was established in the second half of the 19th century and most of them were engaged in the grain trade. The synagogue was built in 1870 and the community had a Jewish school. In 1942, young Jews from the city were sent to forced labor and sent to the front of Ukraine, where the Hungarians fought alongside the Germans. Four townspeople were killed. In 1944, after the Germans entered Hungary, all the local Jews were rounded up and finally transferred to Békéscsaba. Most of them were taken to the Auschwitz extermination camp. Kunágota
Kunágota is a village in Békés County, in the Southern Great Plain region of south-east Hungary. On St David’s Day 1 March 2021 a heartfelt gesture was inspired by the people of Kunágota, branded Hungary’s "Welshest" village, to honour the patron saint of Wales and the Welsh people by illuminating a nearby Castle with the national flag of Wales, which has a striking Dragon. To show respect they sung traditional Welsh hymns such as ‘Cwm Rhondda’, and composed a new piece of music called St David’s Mystery. The piece was written by French Hungarian composer George Gondard.
