Arturo Ripstein
Arturo Ripstein y Rosen (born December 13, 1943) is a Mexican film director and screenwriter. Considered the "Godfather of independent Mexican cinema", Ripstein's work is generally characterized by "somber, slow-paced, macabre melodramas tackling existential loneliness", often with a grotesque-like edge. He is a nine-time Ariel Award winner, including five for Best Picture and two for Best Director. Three of his films have been nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1997, he received the prestigious National Prize for Arts and Sciences for his contributions to Mexican cinema. He was the second filmmaker (after Luis Buñuel) to receive that honour. René Cardona (October 8, 1905 in Havana, Cuba – April 25, 1988, in Mexico City) was a director, actor, producer, screenwriter, and film editor in the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Biography René Cardona was born in Havana, Cuba, on October 8, 1905, and began medical school in Cuba, but due to the political problems of the island, he and his family moved to New York City in 1926, where he continued his studies. María del Pilar Pellicer López de Llergo (12 February 1938 – 16 May 2020) was a Mexican actress. At the 17th Ariel Awards, she won the Ariel Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film ''La Choca'' (1974). Biography Pilar was daughter of lawyer César Pellicer Sánchez and wife María del Pilar López de Llergo, both from Tabasco. At age 18, Pilar studied at the Academy of Contemporary Dance, and was trained by Seki Sano. Pilar later abandoned dance to study philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She also studied at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura. She debuted as an actress in the movie ''El vendedor de muñecas'' in 1955. Emilio "El Indio" Fernández Romo (; 26 March 1904 – 6 October 1986) was a Mexican film director, actor and screenwriter. He was one of the most prolific film directors of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his work as director of the film ''María Candelaria'' (1944), which won the Palme d'Or award at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. La Choca
''La Choca'' ("The Bump") is a 1974 Mexican drama film directed by Emilio Fernández and starring Pilar Pellicer. It won the Ariel Award for Best Picture at the 17th Ariel Awards in 1975. Plot summary In the jungle of Guatemala, La Choca (Pilar Pellicer) is a rude woman trying to resist everything, however, she succumbs in front of the carnal desire for El Guacho (Gregorio Casal), a bandit who killed her husband and attacked her family. Audias (Salvador Sánchez) unsuccessfully tries to rape Flor (Mercedes Carreño), Choca's sister in law. In the following days Flor and El Guacho get involved in a sexual relationship which infuriates Choca, who in retaliation kills Flor, El Guacho and Audias.
