Mexicali Rose (1939 Film)
''Mexicali Rose'' is a 1939 American Western film directed by George Sherman and starring Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, and Noah Beery. Based on a story by Luci Ward and Connie Lee, the film is about a singing cowboy who fights corrupt oil men selling worthless stock from a non-existent well located on land belonging to a poor Mexican orphanage.Magers, pp. 130–131. George Sherman
George Sherman (July 14, 1908 – March 15, 1991) was an American film director and producer of low-budget Western films. One obituary said his "credits rival in number those of anyone in the entertainment industry." Biography George Sherman was born in New York City on July 14, 1908. At age 14 he sailed aboard the SS ''Mongolia'' to Los Angeles, California, where he found work in the mail room at Warner Bros. studios via a film editor friend. Sherman was credited for working on props on '' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'' (1928). Corriganville Movie Ranch
__NOTOC__ Corriganville Movie Ranch was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting, as well as a Western-themed tourist attraction. The ranch, owned by actor and stuntman Ray "Crash" Corrigan, was located in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains in the Santa Susana Pass area of Simi Valley in eastern Ventura County, California. It was destroyed by wildfires in 1976 and 1979. The site is currently a public park in the City of Simi Valley, called Corriganville Park, and operated by Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District. "Allá en el Rancho Grande" is a Mexican song. It was written in the 1920s for a musical theatrical work, but now is most commonly associated with the eponymous 1936 Mexican motion picture ''Allá en el Rancho Grande'', in which it was sung by renowned actor and singer Tito Guízar and with mariachis. Bing Crosby recorded the song on April 3, 1939 as "El Rancho Grande" and it reached the No. 6 spot in the charts during a ten-week stay in 1939. Crosby recorded the song again in 1954 for the album Bing: A Musical Autobiography. The song was featured in the film '' Mexicali Rose'' (1939) starring Gene Autry. Autry also made a commercial recording of the song. Others to record the song are Al Bowlly (as "Give Me My Ranch"), Artie Shaw, Dave Brubeck (on his ''Bravo! Starting as the B-side of Gene Autry's " Mexicali Rose", penned by Autry, 'You're the Only Star in My Blue Heaven' was also popular in Hillbilly jukeboxes and radios in the mid-late 1930s. After the Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. (CBS) purchased ARC and Gene's contract in December 1938. (soon renaming the company "Columbia Records"), 'Star' was re-recorded on at Columbia's new Hollywood studio, located at KNX Radio, Sunset and Gower (Autry and Bob Wills would record many of their great 1940s Okeh and Columbia hits at this location). The younger version is over 20 seconds shorter. At first, only Roy Acuff and his Crazy Tennesseans recorded the song (Roy on October 21, 1936)., and in 1938 by The Delmore Brothers. It was also recorded by Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis during the Million Dollar Quartet sessions at Sun Recording Studios.
