Metekhi Tunnel
Metekhi (Metechi; ka, მეტეხი) is a historic neighborhood of Tbilisi, Georgia, located (42.92N 44.34E) on the elevated cliff that overlooks the Mtkvari river. The neighborhood is home to the eponymous Metekhi Church of Assumption. History The district was one of the earliest inhabited areas on the city's territory. According to traditional accounts, King Vakhtang I Gorgasali erected here a church and a fort which served also as a king's residence; hence comes the name Metekhi which dates back to the 12th century and literally means “the area around the palace”. Tradition holds that it was also a site where the 5th-century martyr lady Saint Shushanik was buried. However, none of these structures have survived the Mongol invasion of 1235. The extant Metekhi Church of Assumption, resting upon the top of the hill, was built by the Georgian king St Demetrius II circa 1278–1284 and is somewhat an unusual example of domed Georgian Orthodox church. Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel
The Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace is a five-star hotel in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. It is in a central area overlooking Old Tbilisi and operated by Marriott International. The hotel opened in 1991. History The Metechi Palace Hotel was built during the Communist period, as a joint venture between Russian investors and Austrian-based ABV Leasing-und Hotelinvest GMBH. It opened in May 1991, barely a month after the nation of Georgia gained independence. It was managed by ABV's Marco Polo Hotels chain, which also had properties in St. Petersburg and Moscow. The hotel operated nearly empty for its first few years, due to the Georgian Civil War, during which the hotel's lights were turned off every night, to avoid attracting sniper fire. The three Marco Polo hotels joined Sheraton Hotels in 1997 and the property was renamed Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel. Abo of Tiflis ( ar, أبو التفليسي, translit=Abu al-Tiflisi; ka, აბო თბილელი, tr; c. 756 – 6 January 786) was an early Christian martyr of Arab origin, who went on to practice his faith in what is now Tbilisi, the capital of present-day Georgia. Life Arab by origin, Abo initially grew up as a Muslim in Baghdad. At the age of seventeen or eighteen, he found himself in Tbilisi, having followed Georgian Prince Nerses, the ruler of Kartli. Nerses, having been slandered before the Caliph, spent three years in confinement; freed by a new Caliph, he took Abo with him. Abo's profession in Baghdad was that of a perfumer, in which he excelled as a maker of fine perfumes and ointments, the art evidently implying knowledge of chemistry. Zviad Konstantines dze Gamsakhurdia ( ka, ზვიად გამსახურდია, tr; russian: Звиа́д Константи́нович Гамсаху́рдия, Zviad Konstantinovich Gamsakhurdiya; 31 March 1939 – 31 December 1993) was a Georgia (country), Georgian politician, dissident, scholar, and writer who became the President of Georgia#List of presidents of Georgia, first democratically elected President of Georgia in the post-Soviet era. A prominent exponent of Georgian nationalism, Zviad Gamsakhurdia was involved in Soviet dissidents, Soviet dissident movement from his early teens. In 1953, he was one of the founders of Gorgasliani, a nationalist group, which disseminated anti-Soviet proclamations in Tbilisi. His activities attracted attention of Soviet intelligence, and Gamsakhurdia was arrested and sent to imprisonment, although he was soon pardoned and released from jail. '' Catholicos-Patriarch'' has been the title of the heads of the Georgian Orthodox Church since 1010. The first Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia was Melkisedek I (1010–1033). In the 15th century the Georgian Orthodox Church was divided into the East and the West parts and accordingly they were ruled by the ''Catholicos-Patriarch of East Georgia'' and the ''Catholicos-Patriarch of West Georgia''. Elguja Amashukeli (Georgian: ელგუჯა დავითის ძე ამაშუკელი; 22 April 1928 – 10 March 2002) was a Georgian sculptor and painter. From 1981 to 1996 he was the chairman of the Georgian Association of Visual Artists. Life Elguja Amashukeli graduated from the ''Tbilisi State Academy of Arts'' in 1955. Since 1996 he has been a corresponding member of the Department of Linguistics and Literature of the ''Georgian Academy of Sciences''. In 1985 he became a member of the Soviet Academy of Arts. He designed subway stations, created memorials and monuments in Georgia. Dimitri Shevardnadze
Dimitri Shevardnadze ( ka, დიმიტრი შევარდნაძე) (December 1, 1885 – 1937) was a Georgian painter, art collector and intellectual purged during Joseph Stalin's repressions. Life Born in Bakhvi, a small village in the western Georgian province of Guria, then part of the Russian Empire, he was educated at the art academies of St Petersburg and Munich. Upon his return to Georgia, he founded, in 1916, and led the Association of Georgian Artists. He helped also to establish the National Gallery of Fine Arts (1920) and the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (1922). He decorated several opera and theatre performances, and movies, and designed an official logo of the Tbilisi State University.
