Messenger Records is an independent record label. Based out of New York City, USA, the label was started by Brandon Kessler during his time in college in 1996. The label has released albums by Anne McCue, Dan Bern, Chris Whitley, Johnny Society, and others. The label also offers consulting services to independent artists, including advice on promotion, touring, and music production. Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Indies release rock, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae, hip hop, and world music. Music appearing on indie labels is often referred to as indie music, or more specifically by genre, such as indie hip-hop. Anne McCue
Anne McCue is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, music-recording producer, video director, and radio host from Australia, more recently (as of 2007) based in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. Early life and education McCue grew up in Campbelltown, an area southwest of Sydney and graduated from Saint Patrick's college and the University of Technology, Sydney with a degree in Film Production and Film Studies. In 1988, McCue moved to Melbourne and took guitar lessons from Bruce Clarke. Dan Bern (also known as Bernstein; born July 27, 1959) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and painter. Chris Whitley
Christopher Becker Whitley (August 31, 1960 – November 20, 2005) was an American blues/rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. During his 25-year career he released more than a dozen albums, had two songs in the top 50 of the Billboard mainstream rock charts and received two Independent Music Awards. Whitley's sound was drawn from the traditions of blues, jazz and rock and he recorded songs by artists from many genres. He died in 2005 of lung cancer at the age of 45. Early life Whitley was born in Houston, Texas and learned to play guitar when he was fifteen. His father was an art director and his mother was a sculptor. During his youth he lived in Dallas, Texas, Oklahoma, Connecticut, Mexico and Vermont. Johnny Society
Johnny Society is an American rock band from New York City. Biography Johnny Society was formed in 1996 by multi-instrumentalist Kenny Siegal and Brian Geltner. They released a self-titled album as Hunk on Geffen in 1996, but disbanded less than a year after their album came out, only for Siegal and Geltner to reunite shortly thereafter under their new identity. Meanwhile, they had already begun experimenting and writing songs on the side with Indian-trained musician Chris Rael in a project they called The Hand, which released an album (''Mule Me'') before re-forming Johnny Society. Their debut album, ''It Don't Matter'', was recorded and released in 1997, after which Rael left the band to give his full-time to the reconvened Church of Betty.
