Thorell studied spiders with Giacomo Doria at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale de Genoa. Thorell studied spiders with Giacomo Doria at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale de Genoa. He corresponded with other arachnologists, such as Octavius Pickard-Cambridge, Eugène Simon and Thomas Workman (entomologist), Thomas Workman.
