Mesagne ( it, Stazione di Mesagne) is a railway station in the Italian town of Mesagne, in the Province of Brindisi, Apulia. Overview The station lies on the Taranto–Brindisi railway and was opened on 25 August 1886. The train services are operated by Trenitalia. The station also serves San Donaci and San Pancrazio Salentino. The station is on the list ''Pegasus'' of 101 stations to be modernised in 2016. Mesagne
Mesagne ( Mesagnese: ) is a ''comune'' in the province of Brindisi and region of Apulia, on the south-east Italy coast. Its main economic activities are tourism and the growing of olives and grapes. It is the fifth most-populous town of the province, and it is from Brindisi. History Mesagne was an important center when Apulia was dominated by the Messapians, because it joined Oria to the port of Brindisi. After the Roman conquest, it was also an important city located on the Appian Way. Its name is from these times. In the Middle Ages it was called ''Castrum Medianum'', then ''Castro Misciano'', this is the name used from the 16th century. When Giovanni Antonio Orsini Del Balzo decided to expend the city's castle, Mesagne evolved, with the construction of a theater, a hospital and the paving of roads. The Province of Brindisi ( it, Provincia di Brindisi) is a province in the Apulia region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Brindisi. It has an area of and a total population of 401,652 (2013). Geography The Province of Brindisi is situated in southeastern Italy, extending for , the second smallest province in the region after the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. It was established in 1927 from the ancient Terra d'Otranto. Taranto–Brindisi Railway
The Taranto–Bridisi railway is an Italian 70-kilometre long railway line, connecting Taranto with Brindisi. The line was opened in three stages in 1886. On 6 January 1886 the section from Taranto to Latiano opened, then with effect from 25 August 1886 the line was further extended from Latiano to Mesagne, and finally on 30 December 1886 the final length from Mesagne to Brindisi came into use. Trenitalia is the primary train operator in Italy. A subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, itself owned by the Italian government, the company was established in 2000 following a European Union directive on the deregulation of rail transport. History The Italian government formed Trenitalia to comply with Regulation (European Union), European regulations. The European Commission's First Railway Directive from 1991 (91/440/EC) required separation of accounting between entities which manage the rail infrastructure and entities which provide the actual rail transportation. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is the Italian railway infrastructure manager, subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), a state-owned holding company.
