Merv Lees
Mervyn John Lees (1932-2018) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s. He was a premiership-winning centre with the St George Dragons and a New South Wales rugby league team, state representative. Career Merv 'Smacka' Lees played five seasons at the St George Dragons between 1953-1958 and began his rugby league career at the Banksia, New South Wales, Banksia Waratahs R.L.F.C. as a child. He went on to win a premiership with St George Dragons, St George in 1956 NSWRFL season, 1956 under coach Norm Tipping, and also played in the 1953 NSWRFL season, 1953 grand final side that were runners up. Injuries curtailed his career, and he retired in 1959. Lees was a prolific tryscorer. His best performance was possibly on 24 July 1954 in a club first grade game against the North Sydney Bears at the Sydney Cricket Ground when he scored five tries. Norm Tipping
Norman Herbert Tipping (1913–2002) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. He later became a premiership winning first grade coach for the St George Dragons. Playing career Born in Hurstville, New South Wales, Norm Tipping's early football was rugby union played with the St. George Rugby Union Club. His first grade rugby league career was often curtailed by serious injury, although he did complete five seasons with the St George club between 1932–1933, 1936, and 1943–1944. In 1936 he suffered a near career ending spinal injury while playing in an end of season tour match and was in plaster for months. Incredibly, after seven seasons in retirement he returned to first grade football in 1943 and finally retired at the end of the 1944 season. Banksia, New South Wales
Banksia is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Banksia is located 12 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the Local government in Australia, local government area of the Bayside Council and is part of the St George, New South Wales, St George area. History Banksia is named for Joseph Banks, a botanist on the Voyage of Discovery of James Cook which visited the nearby Botany Bay in 1770. The suburb was part of land owned by Simeon Pearce (1821–86) and his brother James Pearce in the 1850s, which extended from Rockdale to Brighton-Le-Sands. Until the late nineteenth century, the area was heavily timbered but residential development began in the 1880s.
