Mertolenga Cattle
The Mertolenga is a Portuguese breed of cattle. It is named for the concelho of Mértola in south-eastern Alentejo, bordering with Spain. In 2003 it was one of thirteen registered Portuguese cattle breeds, constituting approximately 19 per cent of cattle in the country.Institut national de la recherche agronomique (2003): ''Animal research'', Volumes 52–53, EDP Sciences S.A. (France). History The Mertolenga originated as a colour variant within the Alentejana cattle of Alentejo in south-eastern Portugal, identified in 1873. Cattle (''Bos taurus'') are large, domesticated, cloven-hooved, herbivores. They are a prominent modern member of the subfamily Bovinae and the most widespread species of the genus ''Bos''. Adult females are referred to as cows and adult males are referred to as bulls. Concelho () is the Portuguese-language term for municipality, referring to the territorial subdivision in local government. In comparison, the word ''município'' () refers to the organs of State. Mértola
Mértola () is a municipality in southeastern Portuguese Alentejo near the Spanish border. In 2011, the population was 7,274, in an area of approximately : it is the sixth-largest municipality in Portugal. Meanwhile, it is the second-lowest population centre by density with approximately 5.62 persons/ (second to the adjacent Alcoutim). The seat of the municipality is the town of Mértola, which has around 2800 inhabitants (2011), located on a hill over the Guadiana River. Its strategic location made it an important fluvial commercial port in Classical Antiquity, through the period of Umayyad conquest of Hispania: Mértola's main church (the Church of Nossa Senhora da Anunciação) was the only medieval mosque to have survived the period in Portugal. Alentejana
The Alentejana is a cattle breed from Portugal that was the main breed raised for meat in Southern Portugal historically. The Alentejana breed has the Protected Geographical Status, protected geographical status of Denominação de Origem Controlada, DOC (''Denominação de Origem Controlada'') from the European Commission. Genetics show that it contains DNA from Africa that may have arrived during the era the region was under Muslim control. It is closely related to the Spanish Retinta breed. The breed region is circumscribed almost exclusively to the Southern Portuguese Region of Alentejo, in both, High and Low Alentejo. The race is represented by rustic, energetic and gentle animals that in the recent past were used to work. Berrenda En Colorado
Berenda (Spanish: ''Berrenda'', meaning "female antelope") was an unincorporated community in Madera County, California. It is located on the north bank of Berenda Creek southeast of Fairmead, and northwest of Madera, at an elevation of . Berenda is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Berendo post office opened in 1873, closed for a period in 1881, changed its name to Berenda in 1919, and closed in 1935. The town was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1907, but was rebuilt. Once described as the "gateway to Yosemite", Berenda once was the terminus of a branch rail line to Raymond (the San Joaquin Valley and Yosemite Railroad) for tourists visiting the park. The Ribatejo () is the most central of the traditional provinces of Portugal, with no coastline or border with Spain. The region is crossed by the Tagus river (''Ribatejo'' translates to "upper Tagus", or more precisely, "up the Tagus" relative to Lisbon at its mouth).
