Lower Merryall, otherwise referred to as just Merryall, is a rural community in the town of New Milford, Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. History The name "Merryall" was given to the land in 1726 by a group of surveyors, after having dinner by a spring and sharing a bottle of spirits. With the contents of the bottle, ''all'' had become ''merry'' and the land was named accordingly. The district was originally established as Merryall but was later divided into Upper Merryall and Lower Merryall. However, they are often grouped as a single Merryall. Litchfield County, Connecticut
Litchfield County is in northwestern Connecticut. As of the 2020 census, the population was 185,186. The county was named after Lichfield, in England. Litchfield County has the lowest population density of any county in Connecticut and is the state's largest county by area. Litchfield County comprises the Torrington, CT Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the New York–Newark, NY– NJ–CT– PA Combined Statistical Area. Connecticut shares with the five other New England states a governmental structure known as the New England town. From 1666 to 1960, Connecticut had a system of county governments, which each had limited powers given to it by the General Assembly. They were abolished by Public Act 152 in 1960. New Milford is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The town is in western Connecticut, north of Danbury, on the banks of the Housatonic River, and it shares its border with the northeastern shore of Candlewood Lake. It is the largest town in the state of Connecticut in terms of land area at nearly 63.7 mi² (164.9822 km²). The population was 28,115 according to the 2020 census. Merryall Union Evangelical Society Chapel
The Merryall Union Evangelical Society Chapel (also known as Merryall Union Chapel) is a historic church building on Chapel Hill Road in the Lower Merryall section of New Milford, Connecticut. Built in 1890, it is the town's best example of Carpenter Gothic architecture. It is used in the summertime for services by visiting ministers of diverse denominations, and hosts weddings and other private functions. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Description and history The Merryall Chapel stands in a rural setting about north of the center of New Milford, on the west side of Chapel Hill Road. It is a single-story wood frame structure, with a steeply pitched gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. Orange Merwin
Orange Merwin (April 7, 1777 – September 4, 1853) was a United States representative from Connecticut. He was born in Merryall, Connecticut and attended the common schools. He later engaged in agricultural pursuits. Merwin was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives 1815-1820 and was a delegate to the Connecticut constitutional convention in 1818. He later served in the Connecticut Senate 1821-1825. He was also a member of the committee of twenty-four to draft the state constitution. Merwin was elected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses (March 4, 1825 – March 3, 1829). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1828. Eric Sloane (born Everard Jean Hinrichs) (27 February 1905 – 5 March 1985) was an American landscape painter, illustrator, and author of illustrated books on the cultural history and folklore of America. Life and career Eric Sloane was born in New York. As a child, he was a neighbor of noted type designer Frederic W. Goudy. Sloane studied art and lettering with Goudy.
