Merriwa, New South Wales
Merriwa is a town located in the Upper Hunter Shire, in the far west of the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. The town is located on the Golden Highway, northwest of Sydney and about halfway between Newcastle and Dubbo. At the 2011 census, Merriwa had a population of 1,790 people. Up until 2004, Merriwa was part of the Merriwa Shire local government area, when it was merged with nearby Scone Shire and Murrurundi Shire councils to form the Upper Hunter Council. The 1940 Melbourne Cup winner, Old Rowley, retired to Merriwa. Merriwa Shire was a local government area in New South Wales, Australia. Merriwa Shire was based in the town of Merriwa, New South Wales, and covered an area of the upper Hunter Valley region, bounded by the Liverpool Range to the north, drained by several rivers and creeks flowing southwards to the Goulburn River. Merriwa was the only significant town in the shire. The Shire was abolished in the 2004 local government restructuring, and combined with Scone Shire and most of Murrurundi Shire to form the new Upper Hunter Shire. Merriwa is a coastal, northern suburb of Perth, Western Australia, north of the central business district. It is part of the City of Wanneroo local government area. It is a predominantly residential suburb, containing two RAAF retirement villages. History Name The name "Hester" was originally approved for the suburb by the Shire of Wanneroo in 1980, after Thomas Hester, one of the first land owners in the vicinity. The neighbouring suburbs of Clarkson and Butler were also named this way. However, the name was opposed by Australia Post due to conflict with the existing town of Hester in south-west WA. "Merriwa", an Aboriginal word meaning "a good place", was then proposed and approved for the area within the same year.
