Merritt, Michigan
Merritt is an unincorporated community in Missaukee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The community is centered between Butterfield Township to the south and Enterprise Township to the north. As an unincorporated community, Merritt has no legally defined boundaries or population statistics of its own but does have its own post office with the 49667 ZIP Code. Geography The community is centered along Merritt Road and M-55 in eastern Missaukee County about east of Lake City. The Merritt post office currently uses the 49667 ZIP Code, which covers most of the eastern portion of Missaukee County, including the northern portion of Butterfield Township and the southern portion of Enterprise Township. The ZIP Code also includes a very small portion of Aetna Township to the west, as well as Lake Township in Roscommon County to the east. Merritt Township, Michigan
Merritt Township is a civil township of Bay County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The township's population was 1,441 as of the 2010 census. It is included in the Bay City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Communities There are two unincorporated communities in the township: *Arn is at the junction of the Huron and Eastern Railway, Kinney Road and Nolet Road. The community was formed around a sawmill. A post office was established here in 1877. *Munger is located along Munger Road ( M-138) from at least Finn Road to west of the Huron and Eastern Railway. (Elevation: 594 ft./181 m.) History Merritt Township was organized on July 8, 1871, with the area being detached from Portsmouth Township. On June 6, 1876, the Munger Post Office was opened. Roscommon County ( ') is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 23,459. The county seat is Roscommon. The county was founded in 1840 and organized in 1875. History The county was formed by the Michigan Legislature in 1840 as Mikenauk County, then renamed Roscommon County in 1843. It was administered by Michilimackinac (Mackinac), Cheboygan, and Midland counties, in succession, prior to the organization of county government in 1875. Michigan State Trunkline Highway System
The State Trunkline Highway System consists of all the state highways in Michigan, including those designated as Interstate, United States Numbered (US Highways), or State Trunkline highways. In their abbreviated format, these classifications are applied to highway numbers with an ''I''-, ''US'', or ''M''- prefix, respectively. M-74 (Michigan Highway)
M-74 was the designation of a state trunkline highway in the US state of Michigan. The highway ran through rural Missaukee County connecting Pioneer with Merritt. The highway was designated by 1919 along a longer route. It was shortened before it was totally removed from the highway system in the late 1930s. The Missaukee County Road Commission initially refused to accept jurisdiction over the roadway and refused to maintain it leading to a legal fight with the state highway commissioner. Route description M-74 started at a junction with M-66 near the community of Pioneer. It ran east on Moorestown Road through Stittsville to Moorestown before turning south on Nelson Road. There it ran through the community of Star City, turning west briefly on Walker Road and running south on Star City Road before terminating at a junction with M-55 west of Merritt. Belleville, Michigan
Belleville is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state Michigan. The population was 3,991 at the 2010 census. As a western suburb of Metro Detroit, Belleville is southeast of Ann Arbor and southwest of Detroit. Belleville is located just south of Interstate 94 and is surrounded by Van Buren Township. Reedsburg Dam
The Reedsburg Dam is a non-hydroelectric barrage dam crossing the Muskegon River in eastern Missaukee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. Located in rural Enterprise Township, the dam was constructed in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps to alleviate flooding from Houghton Lake, which is the source of the Muskegon River approximately upstream. The resulting reservoir is known as the Dead Stream Flooding, and the area is incorporated into the Dead Stream Flooding State Wildlife Management Area, which extends east into neighboring Roscommon County. The Reedsburg Dam is the smallest and newest of the four remaining dams along the Muskegon River, which includes the Croton Dam, Hardy Dam, and Rogers Dam much further downstream.
